A song from my childhood that gives me peace What's your favourite song?

As a child, I remember hearing Charles Aznavour singing Hier Encore. I thought his voice and the music were charming even whimsical. The English translation is such a delight to hear.

Snatches of the lyrics have haunted my memory almost all my life and often come to me in quiet moments.

I feel now that the song has come full circle. This week I heard the song introduced on a local radio station, listened to it with and finally enjoyed it after so long.

I have greatly enjoyed drowning in many different renditions especially those with Charles singing live. The English version was released as "Yesterday when I was young" and will be sitting on my desk for a while.

It is so nice to read the words at the same time. They truly resonate with me and I think the song represents what I want to feel—the nostalgia without anguish.

Has anyone else discovered songs that affect them as this does me and would like to share their stories?

Here are the Lyrics of the English Release. Please feel free to add your thoughts.

Yesterday When I was Young

Yesterday when I was young

The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue

I teased at life as if it were a foolish game

The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame

The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned

I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand

I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day

And only now I see how the years ran away

Yesterday, when I was young

So many drinking songs were waiting to be sung

So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me

And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see

I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out

I never stopped to think what life was all about

And every conversation I can now recall

Concerned itself with me, me and nothing else at all

Yesterday the moon was blue

And every crazy day brought something new to do

I used my magic age as if it were a wand

And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond

The game of love I played with arrogance and pride

And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died

The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away

And only I am left on stage to end the play

There are so many songs in me that won't be sung

I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue

The time has come for me to pay for yesterday

When I was young

Young, young...

Brilliant, thank you Greyone

I've just added (What's your favourite song in the title, hope that's okay)

My favourite song which was so special, we used to sing it together was,

Li'l ol' wine drinker me by Dean Martin,

This really sums him up actually.

Did you ever see the chat show Dean used to do? It was said that he didn't like rehearsals and wanted the guests to be a genuine surprise. I think that showed.
