I had the copper coil removed in July since then my periods have been irregular and very strange. I’m 29 had this removed. during my time of having this fitted my periods where every 28-30 days lasting Around 7 days and being quite a heavy period. Since having this removed my first period was 2 weeks late and lasted around 4 days normal medium flow and didn’t think much of it. Then my next period was 4 weeks late I did numerous pregnancy tests and these came back negative and then my period came but only lasted 3 days unsure if I can count as even a period as it was barley spotting nothing on pad blood was only there when I wiped. I then had another very light period 28 days later again lasting 3-4 days and again very light only blood when I wiped apart form one day where I had a small bleed. Waiting for my period this month to maybe seek advice from my DR but has anyone else had this problem ? I’ve been told it shouldn’t affect my periods as it’s a non hormonal coil.
Thanks

If you are having menstrual irregularity since the coil was taken out, its definitely not the coil. The are various reasons your cycle may have changed, its worthwhile speaking to your gp and having some hormonal profile tests taken including thyroid.
I have had bloods done about 4 weeks after having removed as felt generally rubbish anyway and this included thyroid and they came back normal but I didn’t have any hormone bloods xx
Hi,I only had my copper coil removed 2 weeks ago and so I’m not due a period quite yet. I had it removed because I was having ridiculously heavy and irregular periods along with random awful pains in my vagina! I had the coil for 10 months. Having not had a period post coil removal I can’t share my experience on that yet, but so far my random pains have gone and less bloating. Generally feeling much happier. 👍🏼
You say your periods were heavy. Is this the reason you had it removed? What were your periods like before you had the coil put in? How long did you have the coil for?
Considering the effect the coil had on my body and cycle in those 10 months I had it, I expect to give it time before my periods go back to normal 🤞🏼. I’m just going to give it a year to recover as it was so awful!
I have read similar experiences to yours. I don’t think it’s just the hormonal coil that causes similar symptoms and everyone is different so I wouldn’t worry too much.
If you had it removed because you want to get pregnant then maybe go and see the DR and see if they will have bloods done to check your hormone levels?
Thanks for the reply I had it removed to try and conceive but when I had my coil in my periods were very heavy and painful and lasted some times around 10 days I had it in about 18 months. Period before I can’t really comment as I had the mini pill so rarely got periods because of that. Yes I’m thinking I’m going to see what it’s like this month and maybe consult a GP if it’s the same xx
Kind of.After coil fitting, cramps, flow and other hormonal symptoms increased and it took a few months to get back into a regular swing.
I've had my coil for 3 years now and everything runs like clockwork, even if general symptoms are worse. I can (and will!) tolerate and manage the symptoms, because love the minimal maintenance of the copper iud and the regularity it's now given my flow.
Yes, it was uncomfortable/painful adjusting to at first (plus fitting is awkward), but I'm here to play the long game.
You went through a lot to have it fitted, but if it feels like it's moved, get a scan to check it's situated correctly. I'd recommend waiting a bit longer for it to settle in. If after a few more cycles you can't manage the symptoms still, maybe get it removed.
With a coil I can, but not always get: substantial cramps, very heavy flow, nausea, flushes, increase/decrease in appetite, emotional, fatigued, low mood, acne, bloating and "feel" when a period is due.
These pop at the same time in each cycle, so I can predict and manage. With the copper, I can predict the period to the day and often get a one sided ovulation pain 2 weeks before. I really love how predictable my cycle is now, but I did have to wait for the iud to settle.
