Is bleeding during and after getting the copper coil (IUD) normal?

I’m 19 and never had Children and not sure whether that will make a difference to any of the answers. I recently made the decision to get the copper coil as I’ve been struggling with hormone based contraception alternatives and this seemed to be the next step for me. Yesterday I went through the procedure and it was way more painful than I thought it would be and I can deal with pain as I’ve had my nipples pierced for Christ sake! It was so ouchie 😢 After the procedure there was a lot of blood on the bed; is that normal? And I’ve had a quite thick dark discharge/bleeding since, is that normal? Please help I’m panicking and I can’t find the answers I need. Thank you in advance xx

Yes you can have bleeding even for several weeks after an IUD insertion. It should however be mild. If after several weeks the pain or bleeding has not reduced, then you should return to your coil inserter
