Hello.

Not sure one is better than the other.

One may have advantages and disadvantages over the other and vice versa.

Mirena contains progestogen in it and releases it slowly locally in the womb.

The copper IUD contains no hormones at all.

There are more sizes and shapes of the copper IUDs I think. But I think there are 2 sizes of Mirena style ones now. Like a standard and smaller one for women who haven't had children vaginally (I think ).

Only my limited knowledge from reading when I had my copper IUD.

There is plenty of info online about both. It may also depend what country you live in.

Best wishes 💗

Thank you for your post I live in blackpool ive had 3 children and when thinking about contraception the coil is thee only one left as ive had the implanol and the injection in my bum and ive bled constantly on both if I get the one with hormones surely it could have a similar effect im not sure and docs wont give me the answer I want. The mirena does help heavy periods for women but it can make bleeding worse, it did for me. That's why I tried the copper coil.

How has the copper coil been for you if you dont mind me asking

Sadly no. I tried it for nearly 8 months. I had no probs with bleeding etc. My periods were ok not that painful or heavy. It was the fact my body just wouldn't fully accept the coil, I was always aware there was something there. It wasn't painful but a strange feeling. Also, around my period and during I'd get a horrendous stabbing/shooting pain in my rectum that stopped me in my tracks! It was horrible, only lasted a few seconds, that's was strange too.

When I finally had it removed by my sympathetic GP it felt wonderful and immediate relief.

You may be fine, lots of women use them very successfully.

I'd tried all types of hormonal, could etc. After 5 children, a set of twins in there I decided on being sterilised. Best thing I ever did for me. I'm 38.

Hi. 24 is very young to consider sterilisation. I am very sorry for your situation. It is horrible when a woman cannot find a method of contraception that suits her.

Have you tried a combined pill called Yasmin? When I was younger I found it very good. It's got a newer type of progestogen that is more like natural. It's also licensed for PMS.

I really hope you find a solution 💗
