Years ago, I had a total hysterectomy and I have been on HRT ever since. I love my gynaecologist, who really looks after me. He spotted that 'all his ladies on HRT' were getting dry skin, and recommended that I get a CETRABEN EMOLLIENT CREAM PUMP as a prescription off the doctor (it is cheaper than buying from chemist). It is brilliant.
Have your morning bath/shower, like normal (I only use plain soap), then just dab dry with a towel, then cover yourself in cream (you look very odd and streaky, and my lot really tease me) then wait for it to sink in, a couple of minutes normally. Try to get someone to do your back as well. I put a towel on my exercise bike and do a bit of cycling while listening to the radio! Not a pretty sight but everyone has left for work by then.
It really works. I am dead naughty and have one pump a month with my hormones and give them to 3 other people to save them buying them. Pumps last a very long time.
I did go on HRT years ago but was advised to discontinue them,id been on them for a long time, about 20yrs.I must say i didnt have any problems with it,quite the reverse but as i had a sirgurcle(cant spell that!) "change" i got a bit worried.
Anyway,back to that dry skin.
I have got e-45 cream in a pump which i do apply after bathing but it is my face that really bothers me,what with my glasses! wondered if the vitamins i take have caused it,never had this trouble before!
Dry Skin is not a symptom of CA and I don't think the vitamins and supplements you take would contribute to this problem. I think it a coincidence that your symptoms of CA became evident and dry skin appeared at the same time. I know little about different moisturisers/cream to alleviate the problem on the market and this discussion may be better with your GP.
On a personal level I do agree with what Lit has said below. Although pricey, Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturiser is excellent.
I have been on HRT for a long time. My gynaecologist is lovely and keeps me on a steady dose. He says the ataxia will get me before the hormones do! Luckily we do not have cancer in our side the family.
If you can, I would try a cetraben pump from the chemist. I used to use e-45 cream on my son's eczema and it was not as thick.
My husband has funny dry patches on his face. If it is really playing up he has to use a steroid cream off the doctor to get it under control.
I have to say that even though it is pricey, but lasts AGES, my daughter got my husband and I into Clinique moisturiser, and it is brilliant. I just use it on my face and neck and cetraben on my body. I HATE pampering and attention, but my daughter took me in my wheelchair (so I was relaxed) to the Clinique lady in Debenhams as a Christmas treat last year. She was lovely and very helpful.
Hi Sheila, My neurologist put me on 400mg of Vit E about 10 years ago as it was thought to benefit Ataxia patients, I still take this daily supplemental and I must say with taking this dose daily I have not had dry skin for many years now and I feel my skin has become very soft, and it also seems to keep the ageing wrinkles at bay, hoorrahhh! I can't really tell if it has had any effect on the progression of my Ataxia though
