Hi

For years I have brought Vionic trainers (uk) for the Orthapedic support they give. I have trouble walking and I scuff one foot more than the other but they last years. I hope that helps.

My podiatrist advised me to wear lace ups - preferably boots.

I buy from widerfitshoes.co.uk - when you get to check out you can claim back the VAT.

Hi what do you do to claim the bat back or is that only outside the UK?

I am in the UK. You just have to say what condition you are suffering from. I have ordered from them several times.

It's been trial and error over the last 15 or more years many pairs of orthotic insoles made to my prescription but no help with footwear wide or deep enough even with laces. They never understand how important the underneath of foot is , especially the heel. Often the ankle needs support and ease of dressing.. well .. now have double zipped ankle boots with no insoles and toeless socks that are compression socks. Can't wear slippers. Good luck x

I wear adidas for sport, I really like Birkenstocks they have good support for me.

I find trainers that have the thinnest soles are most suitable as ataxians tend not to lift their feet enough and thick soles catch the floor and make us stumble. I have a pair of Adidas neo caflaire, but I don't really walk much. I was diagnosed with sca 48 back in 2006, now only managed to walk a few meters unaided otherwise I'm likely to loose balance and fall.Whatever you choose take care and stay safe.

My physio a while back recommended barefoot minimalist shoes. They offer very little to no support and it took several months to get even close to wearing them half a day. Three years later and I’m walking unassisted although I won’t be breaking any speed records. I catch myself sleeping with them on my feet

If you’re in the UK. You have one of the best, if not The best shoe company located in your backyard. Vivobarefoot. Not a low priced shoe but I own 5 pairs. It will take some getting used to and definitely take it slow. Your feet will definitely hurt the first few weeks because you’re using foot muscles that have been hibernating inside of traditional foot coffins.

I recently bought a black pair to wear with a tuxedo so I can walk my daughter down the aisle a week from now. Not sure if it really fits the occasion but it’s better than falling face first into the bridal party.

Keep moving forward and don’t look back!

Best wishes to you.

Yes! When worn down they do get a bit slippery. I found the other soles for firm ground are a little more reliable.

Sorry to hear that you fell. Hope you’ve recovered. I’ve come to realize that those of us with ataxia are a resilient bunch.
