I have just had an annual visit to the opticians who suggested I had two separate pairs of glasses.I have had bi-vocals for the last few years and feel that because of my mobility problems will the pair that I want,be where I want them, when I want them!
I think two pairs were recommended because I now need 'prisms'.Has anyone any experience of this? Thanks.

🙂 Over time I must have tried virtually every possible option. Personally, I’d advise having separate glasses if you need a prism. I’ve tried a prism in bifocals, and my balance was much worse, wearing normal distance glasses with a prism was bad enough. But, this is something you may need to try yourself, it may very much depend on the degree of prism required 🤔xB
I have two pairs- one for reading and the other for long distance, driving TV etc. It's a pain because I can never find the pair I want. The optician told me I wouldn't suit bi-focals because of my ataxia. Ithink it may depend on the individual. Inow have a different pair in most of the places I might need them. Good luck
I have never had bifocals, so can't comment …. except that my mother, who also had ataxia could not get on with them.
On my recent visit to the optician I was prescribed prisms for my distance glasses. I did find them strange at first and have now got used to them. I did need to go back at first,to get them adjusted so that they were more comfortable.
With ataxia, it is trial and error and, in my case, I find that no two days are the same . The day I brought my new glasses home I put them on and took them straight off again because everything felt funny. After the optician had adjusted them I was fine.
Same deal here, I had bifocals and now have2 pr of glasses. I seem to have 2 eye problems; my general vision got worse, and I have jumbled vision XXX Neta
Prisms have made my eyesight worse and have cost a lot of money, forgetting what the optician says for the moment, do you feel you need to change your glasses? If you are happy with the one pair you have I would suggest you keep with them until you feel they need to change, once you start using two pairs it will be very hard to go back to just one pair again and you will for ever be hunting around for the right pair! If something is working don’t change it until it is no longer working, I’m 57 and have managed without the separate distance and reading glasses that have been suggested at every optition appointment for the past 10 years!🤓
Thank you everyone for your comments, they have all been very helpful.I realise that every problem we have is so personal but it's so nice to hear from others who have these complications.J.R.
