A fresh look at Curcumin.

Curcumin has long been discussed and taken by PwP. In my never ending quest to find the optimum set of supplements I have focused on those supplements that hold promise of attacking the root cause of PD and other diseases that stem from mis-folded proteins. As I have previously discussed, there is a growing base of research that indicates alpha-synuclein is the one common factor amongst all cases of Parkinson's and so any molecule that acts to enhance clearance of mutant proteins and/or reduce aggregation of mutant proteins MAY help slow or better yet stop progression. Also, any molecule that does this can not REPAIR damage so if you have bad symptoms this type of supplement will not make you feel better. What it MAY do is slow progression.

-

Why am I bringing this up?

-

-

Because there is a newly published human clinical trial of a more bio-available form of curcumin. What is interesting about this trial is that it not only tested patients with a subjective measure of "memory", the researchers used a relatively new tool to scan for actual Tau aggregates in the brain, and what they found is that patients who got the supplement had fewer bad clumps of protein than patients who got the placebo.

-

-

But, Joe, this trial is in Alzheimers!

-

-

Yes, yes, yes. The common thread here is "protein mis-folding", and that is what curcumin appears to be able to work against. Increasingly researchers are discovering the "protein mis-folding" is a common denominator in many neurological disorders, and the molecules that are effective in one disorder may well help in multiple disorders.

Theracumin just got added to my list of supplements:

-

"These findings suggest that daily oral ingestion of a bioavailable and safe form of curcumin improves memory performance over an 18-month period in middle-aged and older non-demented adults. Moreover, such daily oral curcumin consumption may lead to less neuropathological accumulation in the amygdala and hypothalamus."

There are a great many additional papers demonstrating the potential of curcumin to aid in treatment of Parkinson's, but I will stop here for now.

Below are other posts I have made on other supplements I feel are interesting, as well as, a post about myself. I do not have PD, but rather a disease called SCA1, but my disease, like PD, has a mutant protein at it's root, and the symptoms are very similar to PD.

I take Turmeric+ for a different problem but it contains Curcumin. Is this the same? ~ Bob

Turmeric is a root that contains curcumin in tiny proportion. The research I have read so far seems to say that to see any benefit from curcumin one needs to use a concentrated form of curcumin, but I am just learning and reading today so I am sure I have much yet to learn.

I agree, I've been taking Curcumin for some time now as part of my own regime to fight cancerous cells. I believe Curcumin to be the active ingredient of Turmeric and one would have to ingest a massive amount of culinary Turmeric to get a small amount of Curcumin into your system.

In addition to SCA3 I am diagnosed with low grade prostate cancer and based on my own beliefs am taking high dosage Curcumin. This is my own decision based on my own research as I am not happy to expose my body to the effects of chemotherapy etc. (I stress, taking Curcumin is not on recommendation from the medical profession. This is my own decision based on my own research).

Would it help with Friedrich ataxia ?

sunvox profile image
sunvox in reply to simon111

I think anything that improves cellular survival is likely to be of some benefit, but again the difference between FA and other ataxias, PD, HD, and Alzheimers is that FA is caused by the LACK of a protein rather than the presence of a bad protein so the "cleaning out" function is not as potentially helpful. FA is such a difficult case, but the good news is the research in FA is excellent and well funded. I wish I had more to offer! Joe

Hi, sunvox,

I have tried curcumin yesterday. I appreciate your educated suggestion that it may work in the "protein mis-folding" ataxia as well. And I fell good today, there is no "brain-fog‘’ feelings although still walk wobbly. Not sure it is a placebo effect yet, but I will go on taking Curcumin (made by Bioglan in Australia).

Sunvox, have you seen zawy’s comments on this product?

healthunlocked.com/parkinso...

“Dr Trutt, the chart you got from youtube is from a Japanese study that was funded by the Japanese Theracumin company. Prior to their measurement of "curcumin", they used "1000 U beta-glucuronidase at 37 C for 1 hr to hydrolyze the curcumin conjugates" which sounds like they did not measure free curcumin. This correlates with your previous comments questioning a previous study's BCM-95's "free curcumin" data, since this study found a lot of "curcumin" in BCM-95. They never mention free curcumin or the conjugates in plasma.

The data are based on curcumin in the pills and BCM-95 has 17 times more per pill, so even Theracumin's paid researchers showing 10x better theracumin absorption are admitting BCM-95 per pill is 70% better. Theracumin is charging 30x more per curcumin, so at 10x better theracumin absorption per curcumin, BCM is still 3x less expensive per effectiveness. So, BCM-95 is 3x less expensive and you can take 3.5 pills instead of 6 to get the same effect.

As of August, 2017, there is evidence that Longvida curcumin gets to the brain. Amyloid proteins in the brain can be directly viewed through the eye on the retina, and they were observed to become infused with curcumin after treatment with Longvida curcumin.

"Curcumin labeled the central dense Aβ core intensely and, to a lesser degree, the radiating fibril arms"

The authors were funded by Longvida. They only say it increased in the retinas of humans. The brain images were stains performed on cadavers or rodents, so there's no indication that it crossed the blood-brain barrier, except that they claim it got into the retina which also has a barrier. But the way they "measured" it in the retina is highly suspect. It involved a lot of data manipulation and they say the "RAI" which determined the intensity is a trade secret. They do not say how the RAI is related to the presence of curcumin in the retina. The human dose was 4 grams per day.
