Electric wheel chair

I am considering buying an electric wheel chair to use in the house ( bungalow) and I would be interested to hear which models fellow Ataxians have Proved ideal. I see there are a number of them on eBay at a great.y reduced price

Your experiences would be very much appreciated

Keep safe. Ted

Hi Ted

Your local wheelchair service will be able to give you a wheelchair for indoor use. Each service has different criteria so go online for you local service and look for the criteria for EPIC (electric powered indoor chair). If you can get one from them it is better because the upkeep and parts are expensive if you have your own.

If you want to buy your own for indoor use then beware of reps trying to sell you more than you need -a clinical assessment would identify what your needs are and not all agencies have a clinic input. If you need more information then lete know and I can speak to you - I spent 15 years working in wheelchair services.

Good luck!

Hi Ted

My wheelchair is for indoor and outdoor use. It folds down to easily fit in the boot of my car. I love it, but it isn't cheap (£2.5k). It came from Wheelchair 88.

Make sure that any chair fits your needs. If you definitely only need an indoor chair, don't be persuaded to buy an outdoor chair. For indoor use you will need good manoeuvrability, and not too wide a chair, to enable you to fit through doorways.

I have got one - it is a 'shop rider Sena' very manoeuvrable -would recommend for indoor and outdoor use.

Hi Ted

All the best in the wheelchair search! I am 72 suffering from SPG7 ( ataxia related)slowly worsening since my mid 50's but fortunately still walking with and without a stick for the time being.Still hoping to find other similarly afflicted persons who can open a few helpful doors!
