Painful recovery

I am fortunate that my lung cancer was stage one after my upper lobectomy. When I first got out of the hospital my discomfort was tolerable. Now, after 8 weeks of discomfort that has increased to the point that I am on 900 mg of gabapentin, I am told this could be a permanent condition and is intercostal nueralgia. I am scheduled for a nerve block. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this issue.

I am 77 years young and I have multiple diseases.

I was on 2 PAINS CLINIC where I was treated for 18 months each like: Epidurals, nerves blocks, since 45 years with physiological help by a multi different teams. I was also on opioids (Fentanyl patches and a cocktail of pain killers) with NO SUCCESS. My last treatment was Epidural under fluoroscopy and codeine cocktail. Relief 😮‍💨 for 8 months.

Good to know they finally found something to give you relief but must have been rotten for you before that. Hope your pain remains manageable from now on. Xx Moy

You certainly are dealing with a lot and I am sorry to hear it. I am also suspecting that the pain block I will be getting will be temporary.

So sorry to read that you are in pain. I hope they find the right level of pain management for you soon. Good news that you were stage 1 though and not worse. Xx Moy

This sounds pretty horrid janno. I do hope this nerve block works. I can sympathise as I am suffering with what the hospital think is trigeminal neuralgia and the pain is never ending. Let us know how you get on, wish you all the best x

Thank you. Are you being treated for your pain?

Nothing works, have tried everything. Have just been to see Ent to make sure that there is nothing wrong with my ear before I take it further, have been through the eye hospital too.. The pain is like nothing i have ever had and is relentless most days but I sometimes have a few hours relief . I have tried keeping a diary but can't pinpoint any triggers . I had a temporary nerve block in my neck when I had a rotator cuff op on my shoulder and that was fab, no pain whatsoever for 24 hours after the op, so am sure yoh will be OK having that done x

Sounds horrendous, I’ve had nerve blocks etc in my spine but relief is there only it doesn’t last unfortunately. Surely there must be something for this type of pain by now? I get rib pain and pain at the back of my head every time I drop from 30mg prednisone to 20mg so I know what I need for my ra, MCD but you’re in a completely different league. It must be awful, here’s hoping they find something soon for you but please don’t remain silent, keep telling them how bad this is affecting you daily.

Take care

Wendy xx

Thank you for your reply. Pain is pain regardless of why and where and I am sorry that you have these problems. If I find that the pain block does not work for long periods of time I can always stay on the garapentin, but I would like to be pill free. I am on a very high dosage and it probably has some side effects if taken long term. I with you well.

I was on gabapentin 900 mg 3 x daily along with other pain meds but I weaned myself off the gabapentin as soon as I could, took 3 years but I’ve never had any since.

Take care

Wendy

That is exactly what I am on but I don't find that it gives me a great deal of relief.

Mine was robotic, upper lobe and I have been on gabapentin since the surgery. I tried not taking it to see if the discomfort was bearable but it is not. Thank your for your reply. I guess we will just have to live with our pain and consider ourselves fortunate.
