Maybe not posting in the right forum but here goes. Since about 12 years ago I have got on and off a horrible rib pain on the right side but not on my chest but on my back where you would get “fat roll” if that makes sense. When I press the rib its so tender on a specific spot, nothing helps, it eventually goes away after a few days however the pain is here now with a bruised feeling when I press the rib and its aching. Ive tried deep heat, deep freeze, heat packs and nothing takes this pain away.
I have not fallen or done anything, like I say have had it for years on and off, been to the Dr once for it about 5 years ago and it was put down to muscular, its the most dull, bruised feeling ever! When you press it I jump from agony...
Any advice or has anyone had the same or similar thing? This episode is continuing too long now ...
Im scared its a tumor or something on my rib cage!
Thanks

I would go to GP again and request abdominal scan, they can check for any kidney stones etc and look at the pancreas. If that comes up clear get your bowel checked as that's upper abdomen so consistent pain there could be something to do with that maybe. I would get tests done first before taking any meds for it. I doubt it's anything muscular really. Could be acid in the stomach for which I PH test can be done. Go to your doctor and request these tests to see what it is as it's obviously something. Tumor is highly unlikely so doubt let yourself worry too much, I'm sure it's something solvable.
Possibly I'm not sure where all organs are but it's the upper abdomen so a scan would be good just to rule out all the obvious really. GP should arrange for all appropriate tests, don't let the, just chuck some pills at you, best to find the cause out to make sure it's getting treated correctly.
Hi, fear not. I'm sure if it was a tumour you'd know after twelve years!
Pleurisy is very painful, can last a few weeks. I get intermittent pain in the same place I had pleurisy twice only its at the front right (if it was the left I'd be worried about my heart 😳) I seem to get the pain when I'm tired or coming down with a chest infection. I've no idea if you can get it in the upper back area that you mention. The only organs in that area are the lungs.
I think you need to go back to the docs and say exactly what you've written above and add that enough is enough. Demand some action, twelve years is way too long to have a recurring pain. Good luck. Let us know how you get on. P
The lungs are held in a sack like tissue. It is the inflammation of this pleural sack that goes right the way around each lung. This is what is called pleurisy and can affect any part or parts of the sack. HTH
Surely I cant have pluerisy for 12 years on and off. Ive had teo chest xrays one last year and one in March this year it was all normal so were my bloods and kidney and liver function tests
I am not your doctor and I would not presume to diagnose your condition.
My reply was to Peege who said that she only had pleurisy in the front and did not know whether the pain could reach around the body.
As a long-term (many years) sufferer of pleurisy and of pleuritic pain in a number of locations I hoped my post would add to the clarification of the subject for any who were interested.
As to whether pleurisy would show up on an X ray I don't know. I would have thought not.
As suggested by others I also recommend that you revisit your GP and ask that they investigate your pain. I hope that they can resolve it soon and that you do not have to suffer the constant worry any longer.
Pleurisy can be heard through the GPs stethoscope. It would be great to have it ruled out so they can get on with diagnosing you. Pleurisy is excruciating - and I've a high pain threshold! Almost exactly like broken ribs.
Good luck with your appointment. Keep going back every time you get the pain, keep a diary. X
Hi just to say I had a pain like for this the years as well and it would go away but it would come back again on and off it turn out I had a disc problem in the spine you would be amazed were you feel pain when it comes to the spine I hope it helps see a dr and ask if it’s a problem with the spine it even may be a nerve
Hi any pain you feel can be referred. So for example you could have a problem with your kidneys but would feel pain in a different place. I have suffered from back pain for many years and am never sure where exactly the problem is.
I agree to go back to the doctors and demand some tests. x
Thanks all. Its such a stubborn pain..... like bruised when I predd that certain part of my back on the rib, so uncomfortable to lay down and then move over on it ..... grrrr fearing rhe worst though like cancer of something.....
The consensus here is that you need to get a proper diagnosis from a decent doctor, don't live in fear anymore, it's not good for anyone. Make that appointment first thing on Monday. Don't be fobbed off. 😃
