Excersising recovery .?
Hi
It’s down to limitations. Rather than one 10 mins walk try two 5 mins with a few mins rest in between. Then build up slowly.
Hello carolg1, so sorry to hear you've been so poorly with horrible chest infections that we all dread with a passion. Good that your taking things gently, and keep going slowly carol, there's no time limit. Each time I've had a chest infection it's taken a while to get my breathing back to what is classed as normal with lung disease. I find when I'm breathless, I sit and do my breathing excersises and use my nebuliser more than normal just to get me over the worry stage. Most of all carol there's no time limit, be kind to your self. Take care of yourself ✋️😊
Hi, I've been the same, lately. Had to stop my Swimming because everything, makes me exhausted. Be better in the warmer weather hopefully. Till then, little by little, i think.,. 😊
I just posted I’m new on here but feel same. On excersise bike I feel great. Hour later feel flemmy and tight
Infections which go on for months on end cause a great deal of airway inflammation, hence tightening, breathlessness & wheeze. I'm in the same boat, I've been trying to get rid of one since early October and my chest has never been so bad. I'm on permanent antibiotics & prednisone at quite a high dose (just started tapering from 50mg) but am barely able to walk at all, though I can sit & chat ok. It's a nightmare isn't it? I'd stop & rest the moment you feel your chest tightening, wait til that completely subsides, then do a little more if you can, but slowly slowly, and when the air is cold, stay indoors! Unfortunately I'm very impatient but I'm trying to be sensible. It's quite scary, even though I'm an old hand at this. Glad to hear from you, carol, and just hope warmer weather (when we get some) improves things.
It really is! I've been diagnosed 14 years now. N i still find it scary. Especially because i live alone. We just have to look after ourselves, i reckon and just do what we can when we can. 🙂
Not sure I'd cope if I lived alone, though if you do you've no choice. Much, much harder though.
I’m sure it is so much harder living alone with this awful disease, but as I have a young family I also hate them having to watch me struggle ....it breaks my heart, hopefully il recover a little now and hopefully get a bit stronger, hope you are well hanne xx
They will cope. Children are super resilient i find. Mine have gone off to Uni and out into the World. As they should. They're good kids and i was not always well, when they were growing up. Can't be helped.😊 I have a couple of good neighbours too n that helps. You can only play the hand your delt. Not easy on your own, but, lots of People my age the same. ☺️
Hello Carol
Baby steps.. physiotherapy if you can get it, pulmonary rehabilitation as well see with your GP or respiratory unit..
I got an exercise bike at home in August ready for the bad winter months because I know I find it harder to go out.
Keeping active around the house, even if you take longer to do your chores, stop and have a hot drink and a nap to recuperate.
Drink plenty of fluids and eat well xx
Take care x

Hello carolg1 .
Oh those blasted lung infections.😡 😖 They can really do a number on us and leave us just so deconditioned. I think you are doing a marvellous job trying to start exercising again. As everyone has said, slow and easy.
I can understand your feeling about your family, but they probably love you so much they look beyond the disease and all they see is their wonderful, brave mum doing her best everyday .
I really hope you start feeling better very soon.
Cas xx 🌹🌸🌺
Just BREATHE and DONT GIVE UP no matter what. Stop and rest before that terrible gasping starts so you just completely go around it by going easy on yourself. Likely you’re not training for the Boston Marathon right- so just make it comfortable and enjoying it because if it’s not fun it’s more likely than not that you will quit. Do you take a rescue inhaler or some inhaler with you when you go out? Be sure to put that in your pocket. I’ve found personally keeping a spacer on rescue inhaler helps me in a pinch more than the powdery steroid ones that make me gain unwanted weight. I’m not real good at doing everything the doctor says. I didn’t mind my parents as a teenager either. Also make sure you’re warm enough, I know the slightest chill can send any one of us into a full on cough attack or that feeling like the giant sumo wrestler is laying on top of us or I’ve also felt like maybe it was what being buried alive would feel like. Think if we were all in the same place at same time with our panic states of trying to catch another breath boy we’d be a sight huh. Resistance bands and Pilates machine are other options change up your exercise routine. If you sit in a chair and do dumbbell excercises w/low weight and high repetitions you’re likely to achieve the success you’re looking for. Later down the road move up in weight and down in reps. The YMCA I find really has a lot to offer, at least here in USA they are concerned w/community, elderly, disabled and families all equally- I really like them an it’s a safe place for the little guys ( kids) well good luck sorry I’m starting to ramble as I’m falling asleep-Goodnite
I thought l let you a reply but then tapped something and might have lost the reply. Could you let me know if you got it. If not l will try again later. 🙀 iPhones ... or this site logs me out.
Hi again ... yes lost the reply to you so will try again.
The British Lung Foundation put out a booklet for exercise as well as a DVD and a booklet about all lung conditions.... all free... give them a ring.
They will advise you about exercise as well.
I would walk for 1 to 2 minutes to begin with stop and breath in through your nose and out through your mouth until your breathing comes back to normal then continue. Build it up slowly.
The Respiritory team on the course l am going to say we need to get out of breath but of course they are there with us if we need help... it's when we are on our own we feel vulnerable. We have 11 different exercises to to ( in their exercise handbook) at stations around the room starting at 2 minutes and building it up to 2 and half minutes. I find l can't do all of these at home as not enough room in my little house.
I can only say from why l have learnt set yourself little goals.
All of my ramblings above is from what I have learnt from our fab team and we as a group are blessed to have had them in our area.
I hope this helps a little, but get the booklets there are lots of tips in there that help us. I hope this is of some help.
😊
Hi Carol, I also exercise with Oxygen, like Stone says, break it Down, I manage about 2000 Steps a Day and I'm helping BLF with Steps to the Moon, my hubby bought me a pedometer so this inspires me. Last week with the Snow I Was Housebound, I marched on the spot and did stretch exercises at home plus my exercise Bike. No Snow now, so Today off to my Breathe Easy Exercise class. Being I'll saps all your strength and it takes awhile to get motivated, you will do it Carol, Just do your Breathing Control. Good Luck. Carolina xxc
Hi whilst recovering from pneumonia due to the cold my time outside was limited. I found that there were many gentle exercises that you could do in the home to build up strength. I found YouTube a great source of videos for exercises. I think at times people think they must walk but there are so many other exercises you can do to help regain fitness. Good luck.
Hi
I use ankle and hand weights at home, and you can gently build up some strength in your arms and legs and lungs. Its just like rehab at home. Try walking on the spot and gradually increase. Not good weather to be out in the cold walking. Take care.
I hope to start a Zumba class for beginners/or those not overly fit!. The music is a great motivator, but stuck at home right home and all my spare money going on taxis to visit Mum is hospital. Hoping for a local bus to start soon near my house, it would make a big difference, all crossed.
I know exactly how you feel. I can exercise for 5/10 mins and then as soon as I stop I feel even more breathless. It’s so weird. And then I start to panic. It puts me off exercising altogether. They say to exercise till your breathless but it is so scary. But there is some good advice on here. Good luck 🙂
Do sitting exercises.. do u have utube on your tv .. all sorts of exercises while sitting on chair . Or ask your doctor or Pulmonary rehab at hospital, I'm sure they will give u a set of exercises to do.. You should join a group maybe not doing these by yourself . Definitely talk to your doc
I feel after reading all your comments on here that I must thank all of you! You are a wonderful and knowledgeable group and your comments have helped me enormously! Thank you so much!
