Following a chest infection and athsma flare up I have spent 10 days on 40mg of steriods, the last dose being the day before yesterday. I am feeling a lot better now, and my athsma is under control but I am feeling incredibly thirsty and dizzy, could this be because I have stopped taking the steroids? I am also taking doxycycline once a day, but just have 1 day left of these.
Has anyone found they feel a bit out of sorts after stopping the steriods?

Hi Coops, have you weaned yourself off the steroids gradually or just stopped? You need to speak to your GP and explain how you’re feeling. If you’re worried then do contact 111. Xxx
I think if it's less than 3 weeks you are OK to just stop. The last lot I was on the hospital doctor said to just stop taking them, I asked if it needed to be gradual and he said no just stop taking them x
It's confusing isn't it when we are told different things. I always feel so much better when on steroids, it's a shame they are so bad for you. Hope with you and Pete are doing ok x
I have prednisolone and antibiotics for regular chest infections, especially in the winter, I also suffer from osteoarthritis. I've noticed that when lm taking the course of steroids my pain decreases but when l stop the pain is worse than before.
They do a great job at first of controlling the inflammation but then often begin to cause a few issues.
So the thirst- steroids cause insulin resistance in the cells in the body so our blood sugar levels increase - that may be why you feel thirsty ?
Dizziness I am not sure but I know that when I have an asthma COPD flare then my 02 levels fall and need high dose steroids then my lips feel strange ???
Withdrawal from steroids is sometimes tricky. I feel I have the symptoms of the inflammation returning but that only lasts for a few days. I know now that it will get easier and use Paracetamol to control those symptoms.
It can take time for steroids to leave our system up to 3 months apparently. I know I cannot have my annual oxygen assessment unless I have been off oral steroids for at least 6 weeks.
If you continue to be concerned then do see your doctor for advice.
A come down from steroids for me is a sense of deflation but doxycycline is not nice for me it tends to affect my stomach and makes me thirsty so could be whichever one you have these side effects from .I hope you feel better soon
I'm on Steroids at the moment but even reducing slowly as instructed I feel low mood and am thirsty but was told to control it🙄.I'm diabetic which can make me feel so thirsty I ended up with low sodium levels. Trip to hospital even.
Please speak to your GP urgently hun. Wishing you luck hugs🤗
I feel much better this morning, I don't feel at all dizzy or thirsty and I walked my little one to school in the freezing cold without needing my blue inhaler which is amazing! I think that must be the new inhaler that I was given that I now take twice a day called Forstair. (I think)
I think I have been really neglectful of my athsma, I have had it since a child so I would just buy blue inhalers off the internet and take them multiple times a day and just assumed this was what I needed to do! The Dr I saw for chest infection explained how treatments have moved on and I have a few upcoming appointments to discuss things further. This latest chest infection really quite frightened me, you all know that feeling when you can't catch your breath. Anyway, onwards and upwards!
Hi Coops1981 - I have not long finished a 6 a day Pred and 1 a day Doxy - Like you I got very dizzy half way through, lasted a day and a half. OK now - Mine wasa COPD Flare. Are you drinking enough water, that can be important.
As Saay says you should not just stop taking 40mg Pred - You really have to wean of them,
I have COPD and take steroids when I have a flare up. Seems to me some Drs say stop and others say take a reducing dose. The medical centre I use has about 10 Doctors and they are split between the two methods. Sorry this is obviously a useless reply but I am saying it how it is.
