I don’t know up to date this information is on the different cost of inhalers - there’s no date on the page.

You might find it interesting though ?

Very interesting. If salamol is fairly new then perhaps it's a reasonably recent list. 2023 was written at the very bottom left.

Salamol £1.46 & Ventolin £1.99, not much in it financially although I suppose all those 50p add up.

It doesn't really matter the difference if it doesn't work and Salamol didnt work for me. My neighbour had his prescriptions delivered and constantly said there were so many items that he didnt need and constantly told them but because it was automatic they were delivered anyway. For me this is the biggest waste. I only order what I need rather than what is down on my records.

Same here, I only order what I need.

In the past I ordered through the pharmacist (because the surgery always messed it up) but the cheeky chemist also added everything else on my prescription that I hadn't requested. Cheeky b****r, (they get a fee for everything ). So much was wasted on a regular basis, I informed him nicely, then assertively twice, then threatened to report him. Once it's made up they can't take it back. Must have been 100s of £ in the days inhalers were £70. Grrr Much better with the NHS app.

I didn't realise it was the chemist that was doing this, no wonder they keep mithering for people to have theirs delivered. I am lucky that one of my friends and neighbours is collecting mineast the moment x

I was told by the pharmacy assistant that they can take meds back and put into stock if they haven't left the pharmacy, which is why I check before I take them home.No good if you have them delivered, of course.

Appreciate that. It does seem a huge waste doesn’t it ? But it’s a safety thing I believe ? Possible risk of contamination?

Yes like many other countries you need insurance to cover the costs of being poorly. We do have insurance here really its paid by our taxes, sadly far too many people are taking from the system that have never paid anything in x

I am not sure what you mean about too many people taking from the system that have never paid anything in. Are you able to explain more please and what evidence you have for this ?

I live in an area where alot of people have never been to work in their lives that live of the state with nothing wrong with them and so have never paid anything into the system. I am not saying that people who are genuinely ill shouldn't be helped and looked after, of course they should, but there are alot of people that just dont want to work .

Interesting, thank you for that.

Although I wouldn’t want a health model like they have in the US would you?

I understand that there, when oxygen is prescribed the insurance companies and are given the prescription and don’t always agree to provide what is prescribed! Ouch!’

No I certainly wouldn't want that type of healthcare. I think we have one of the best systems in the world but sadly think it is abused, as explained.

interested to see what you pay for Spiolto Respimat...32 pounds and 50p. here in australia...i pay under three pounds for it.

PaulineHM profile image

Many of us here don’t pay for prescriptions as we are an older population. This list just give the cost of the inhalers to the NHS.

Wow looking at those prices, I don' t understand why I am given Salamol instead of Ventalin, Ventalin is the same thing my GP told me Ventalin is so much cheaper and larger containers, must be more cost affective surely

Oh I don't pay for my medication as I am over 60 (UK) horrendous if you have to pay for prescriptions

PaulineHM profile image
PaulineHM in reply topurdeyspringer

My understanding is that the change in prescribing is to do with the propellant which is used in Ventolin and its effect on the environment, rather than the cost. There is no propellant in Salamol.
