Hello everyone Berry Head here I have had COPD now for 15/16yrs and I am on Sprivia Respimat and Seretide and manage very well and Ventolin when needed which is not very often, my question is how is everyone managing in this hot weather which is taking my breath away,I have got my portable oxygen machine when needed which helps when needed. I to have severe COPD which I have been managing with my Meds …. but this heat is affecting my breathing, and creating a lot of phlegm 😔 will be glad when it passes. Xxx
Hello Berry. Welcome to the forum. 😊👋 I am in Japan and our weather is hot and muggy from June until around September. Humidity is around 80% as I type this and it is 6:30am. Luckily we have air-conditioning but it is expensive to keep on. All I can do is open all the windows and get my big fan out. It also helps to have ice packs. Cooling the nape of the neck and wrists help a lot. Take walks in the early morning or late at night. I hope it passes for you soon. Best wishes. Cas 🙋♀️🐕
I live in Cyprus where the hot button is pressed end of May and doesn’t get switched off until September. Like Caspiana windows shut and air con on. When there is a wind blowing windows open and fan on. Keeping my head cool works for me too. I need oxygen 24/7 this time of year. Look forward to hearing other people’s suggestions it might help me 😉. The chance of it lasting long in UK is remote 😂😂. People tell me those personal air coolers from JML are good but I haven’t tried them. Take care.
A fan and I bought a sunshade awning freestanding for outside the lounge window last year and it is a great help keeping all my upstairs windows open and curtains closed keeps rooms cool.walking the dog is harder whilst it's hot so early am late pm is only just manageable for me at the moment. Everything seems twice the effort and I am not on oxygen so I feel for you. A portable air conditioner helps but expensive for the energy bill
I am coping OK with the weather. Not doing much except a bit of high street shopping and supermarket. Just walking a bit slower out in the heat. But I am not on Oxygen at present. The weather is turning to rain again from Saturday and next week So hope it cools down soon to help you. Take care. Brian
Apparently there has been a bigger than usual demand for replacement oxygen during the last few weeks. Baywater are also in the process of opening a new bottling plant which has limited their ability to meet demand but they have always seen me through. Unfortunately the converters, upstairs and down, also throw out heat which adds to the room temperature.
Indeed, muggy hot weather and no breeze is awful, i try to keep in cool shade, in the house i have a dyson in the bedroom which gets rid of dust and pollen and particles - what i found out last year was to take allergy tablets once a day from the pharmacy and this has really helped me although can make you feel drowsy. i try and keep windows open to create a breeze doesnt always work though
Moderate COPD. My resp nurse suggested small wearable battery fan for the face in this weather. Cheap and effective for lower level COPD
Hi Berryhead, i too have had COPD for 12 years plus though I have been given a Trelegy inhaler instead of seretide and tiotropium and it is a little better but as you know any improvement is a bonus. I also use Ventolin and i too struggle far more in this heat. I try too keep the heat out by closing my blinds and curtains and using a fan. I hope your breathing gets better soon.
Fanning the face can help with breathlessness. Someone told me once, I think it was BLF nurse on my Pulmonary Rehabilitation course that particularly in an emergency when ventolin isn't to hand. My 3 yr old g'daughter had an asthma attack in walking in London, a van's diesel fumes went right in her face. Quite scary at the time, luckily nearby was a newspaper stall so I grabbed The Evening Standard in desperation and fanned her for a few minutes. I couldn't believe that it really worked.The nurse explained that nerve endings in the face had some connection to the lungs - I'm afraid I cannot remember exactly . Just glad it worked, she recommended those little handheld fans.
I have a small electric fan which can be recharged by USB and it is a big help to me when the weather is like this. Holding up to my face makes a lot of difference.

Yes I’ve been taking Ventolin for 4 times per day for many years now as I have chronic Stage 4 COPD. I am also using Trimbow inhaler twice a day which is a preventer and steroid together. I am a concentrator morning and night and also cylinder oxygen when moving around.
At the moment my breathing is really bad. This weather always has an adverse effect. Normally I would use Ventolin 4 times per day and 4 puffs (2 puffs is not enough for me). At present, I’m using it 5 or 6 times a day as I’m have been struggling so much. The consultants have told me there is not anything more that they can do for me. It so can be a bit difficult emotionally for me.
Anyway, I hope you’re better off in your health than me and god luck to you for the future.
