Extreme hot weather tuesday/wednesday

Hi guys

How are people managing in this extreme hot weather .It reminds me of the hot weather of 1976

Everytime I finish one bottle of water I go & refil it & drink another one I must ve drunk about 6 bottles of water in total (dont know if im doing the right thing -in terms of how many bottles I should drink here)

I sit with 2 fans right near my face & a cool tower that cools down my lounge & have my window open & cover it

If people are opening their windows please close it as soon as the temperature goes down because midges come in & ive spotted a lot so hopefully theyll die soon

Take care everyone & try to keep cool best you all can

I have a tower fan in the bedroom a good distance away at the end of the bed to the side I can’t have AC even struggle in the car have to keep turning it off. I rise early and stay outside till it gets hot then stay in for the rest of the day. Be careful of having fan too close to you as it will cause other problems like a stiff neck. I know you shouldn’t drink too much water probably no more than a couple of Litres I’m a massive tea drinker and have got used to drinking it cool as the steam affects me I find it great if I’m thirsty worth a try. You will find with time what works for you I know it took me ages to realise if something don’t work for you try another way take great care of yourself x

Yes I do too but have it in the lounge -I had it right next to me as well as my normal fan opened my window but closed the curtain over it

Because the heat is extreme from early in the morning I found a great way to keep cool . I fill up a large bag ice and peg it on a piece of Dowling I've tie wrapped onto my fan , I face the fan toward my recliner sun lounger outside you get nice cooling air but also little drops of ice cold water hitting me and last a good few hours πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

1976 if only I could go back to my 16yr old self lol, aircon unit has been a good purchase last year but can trigger coughing on and off, sleeping a nightmare with a small fan on constantly about 5hrs if I'm lucky but hey ho it's not forever 🀞

I have a small air cooler next to my bed, and drink as much water as I feel I need. Also eat smaller meals in the evening and try and keep cool at work, which is relatively easy as have as have a huge office all to myself and several large fans etc

I have a great big fan & keep it on all night & just eat salads

I was a heck of a lot younger in 1976 and could cope with it better. I'm keeping windows closed during the day and running fans. Only opening windows at night when it has cooled a bit but fans still on all night. I'm grateful to be retired and not have to work in this heat.

I was expecting my first child throughout the summer of '76 and was absolutely huge (she was one of the biggest babies in the hospital that year!) My lower legs were horribly swollen, but I still managed to walk into town and back. We were living in East Yorks then, and the drought meant standpipes were brought in. By some miracle my street was never put on standpipes, even though the others were. What a relief πŸ˜„

I've often thought that being pregnant during very hot weather must be very unpleasant. I remember a holiday in Cornwall that summer where I virtually lived in a bikini. We had a convertible car then and it was one of the few years that we were able to put the top down and leave it down!

I opened windows early morning - 06.00 and then will close from about 10:00. Good to get some rest air in to my flat. Blinds closed from 3ish as sun moves round.

I have the curtains closed and the fan on but at the opposite end of the room is my oxygen machine which throws out heat.

I was doing my O levels in '76 and managed to persuade my parents that everyone was revising at the local lido! They dutifully drove me to and fro, it was a 12 mile round trip, and asked me every day where all my class mates were! They were of course at home revising under their parents watchful eyes! The hall / exam room was glass on two sides, so very hot, but we got through it and it was a good results year :) I, like Carole, am only opening windows at night, but am very lucky that my house is very cool and, as yet I have not needed a fan! It is days like this that I was grateful to go to work and enjoy the aircon at Tescos!

I do like a bowl of cold water to put my feet in, with a few drops of eucalyptus oil, very refreshing :) Well stay cool all of you, take care, xx

Reading this reminded me that my mum lived in an old cottage that was always cool in summer and warm in winter. They knew how to build in the 1800's.

leo60 profile image
leo60β€’ in reply toCDPO16

They certainly did! I have been fortunate enough to have lived in some very ancient houses, which my parents renovated (conserved really). The positioning and the materials were vital. Thatched were cosy in the winter and cool in the summer. We lived in a house bordered by a river that when it flooded it came up to the doorstep and no further!! Builders should be made to take weather into account in new homes! I hope your garden isn’t suffering too much in this drought? I haven’t had any rain for such a long long time, I think I may go and dance in it when we finally get some! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Try to stay cool Carole xx

Hubby keeps watering newly planted things and the pots, the rest is fending for itself. It is forecast to be down to 20 degrees here tomorrow but no rain until Friday and that doesn't seem certain. Maybe you could do a dance before it rains?! xx

leo60 profile image
leo60β€’ in reply toCDPO16

Well done hubby! I went out at 7am to water, it was hot even then! We are still forecast 25/6 but even that will be better!! My mum always used to call herself a witch and indeed did a few successful rain dances! I wonder if I inherited the powers? I’ll probably get struck by lightning knowing my luck!! Xx

Hi it is very hot today , I,m using a small fan , windows open to rear of the house , cold drinks from fridge and the ice pack I use for swollen joints I have wrapped in a towel and put at the back of the chair I sit on and it last for a little while which cools my body. My cough is horrendous in this muggy heat role on tomorrow it will still be 26 or above but thats about mormal. Stay cool everyone and take care.

Wow 1976, we were in the Uk then, I was only 24 and my daughter was only 2 and I remember she had a sandpit and paddling pool, we spent the summer outside everyday. The good thing now is being retired I dont have to do anything but find I cant spend too much time outside as its too humid and dont have any energy. I went out with my friend last night to celebrate her birthday and found a lovely shady spot in the outside garden and was grateful not to cook. I think last night was the hottest night and couldnt cool the house down, even though I had the blinds and windows closed my bedroom has the sun on it all afternoon sk was like a hothouse. I will be glad when the temperature drops just a little so we can sleep. Keep well hydrated eveyrbody x

Yes its the only time I think thank goodness I live in the north lol. Its much fresher today which is lovely but as you say hot in the house, all my windows have been open wide today to cool it down, although i havent helped by making banana bread and getting the dough ready for a pizza later x

My tried and tested method is to soak in cold water and wring out a bandana and put it round my neck. Then frequent spraying of my neck, hair etc with a plant mister. We have an industrial fan going, very effective but noisy. And blinds down. Stay safe and take care everybody xx

I have carers and my carer this afternoon came in looking exhausted with having to work in this heat. She said the worst was having to get into her car if she hadn't been able to park it in the shade. I remember those days from when I was working and felt very sorry for her but grateful for her visit.

Yes it's certainly been hot. I took my brother to Birmingham Airport this morning for his return home to Gran Canaria and it was great with the windows open. But certainly need the fan on overnight. Brian
