Any advice would be great

I was diagnosed with asthma and bronchiectasis in 2019 and muddled along quite nicely until June this year when I developed a flare up. In July, proteus mirabilis was identified in my sputum and I was started on a two weeks course of amoxicillin. I gave another specimen of sputum in a week later and the proteus was still there so I was started on a month of augmentin. Another specimen this week showed that proteus mirabilis is still there and the only advice I have been given by the respiratory nurses is to keep going with the augmentin. How long do most people need to carry on with oral antibiotics if the organism doesn't shift? Thank you 😀

Sorry can't help. If you call the BLF when they're next open (I'm not sure if they are available for advice on weekends), they may be able to help

This is a very unusual bacteria to be found in the lungs. It is usually associated with bladder infections coming from the use of cathetas. I would say that the nurses are way out of their depth with this one and you need the advice of your consultant. You may need some IV to clear it. I do hope that you have a proper bronchiectasis specialist consultant. It is a very complex condition and general respiratory cons, GPs and nurses simply do not know enough about it. If you do not have one- search for one at a large teaching hospital near you. Take the name to your GP and insist on a referral. My principal relationship is with my specialist via her secretary. After 67 years with the condition I trust nobody else.

Hi Oliver27 ,it's taking its time going away this bug ,maybe it will need longer on antibiotics, I grow haemophillis influenzae bugs which I take amoxicillin for a month and azithromycin all year round 3 times a week.its a difficult one getting rid of them and I hope you feel better soon.

Good morning Oliver I also have asthma and last August found out I have bronchiectasis and since than I been getting nothing but chest infections and getting me down. I been on antibiotics for over a month now as still got one. All night my chest was hurting and always tried. Do you get tried with your bronchiectasis as my doctor said because I am low on iron also but I never been like this. I can't take amoxicillin because my face swell up and get can't breathe so I have to have clarithromycin I have them for two weeks but because not cleared up yet have to take two more weeks. I have set of specimen so have to wait and see if anything shows up. And with the cold weather coming I thing we will get more infections. I had my first covid jab in January after two weeks of having it I got covid and was in a bad way could not breathe and only was drinking water. I know having covid made my lungs worse. I never knew anything about bronchiectasis until I found out I got it. No one tells me anything much about it so I look on line myself. But the doctor I saw few weeks ago I sending me back to hospital. Good luck I hope you get some answers as I know it does get us down. Keep us updated please and hopefully you get well soon.

Hello Oliver27, all I can say is when I had persistant infection I was given steroids both advised by consultant and the GP. Recently they have tried to shy off giving steroids but often a short concentrated course can work wonders. No services available till after weekend so good luck on sorting it next week , if only some sound advise.

sadly i found Amoxicillin did absolutely nothing for my chest , and therefore is no longer prescribed to me , augmentin is a stronger antibiotic,,,,that sadly made me sick ,,, i found doxycycline to be the best antibiotic to treat most of the infections i get , you may find you need intravenous antibiotics ,i would say speak to your dr or consultant ,hope your soon feeling much better ,

Ai agree with Nanny1086. I was given amoxicillin in my rescue pack and it does not help me at all. I had a nasty exacerbation a few weeks ago and phoned the hospital to speak to my consultant who agreed and asked me to call in the hospital to collect doxycycline which worked wonders. Am now back on Azithromycin and feeling good.
