Does co/amoxiclav work for Haemophilus influenzae?

Both my husband and I are currently on a weeks course of co/amoxiclav (augmentim) for Haemophilus influenzae upper respiratory infection (confirmed by sputum test). My husband has had an ongoing cough and sore chest since mid Feb and 4 weeks ago I started with blood in my sputum. We are both in our early 40’s (hasn’t helped that some of the symptoms are like COVID 19 but that is another story). Anyway I’m nearing the end of the antibiotics and my chest is still sore and glands under my arm are very sore. It doesn’t feel like it’s completely worked. Does this antibiotic treat haemophilus influenza properly?

If your symptoms are still there or worse after a course of antibiotics, I would go back to your GP. It may be that you need a longer course or it might be something different. If you discuss with your GP then they can reassure you or investigate further.

My husband was in hospital recently with a chest infection and was given co-amoxiclav with Clarithromycin intravenously then in tablet form so it must be considered an effective treatment. He has Co-amoxiclav in his rescue pack. I think you should consult a doctor as you both sound like you need something additional.

Take care

If it was confirmed by lab then their report would have given other antibiotics that it was susceptible to. Maybe you need a longer dose . Have you had augmentin previously? Phone your doctor.

Amoxiclav or doxycycline are recommended for haemophilus bugs ,depends on the strength of the dose ,check with doctors to see if they’re strong enough xx
