Paiñful knee

I have had painful knee for over a week and decided to phone dr for painkillers. Suddenlyb painful overnight . Not hot ,swollen or inflamed . She thought arthritis and suggested para cetamol , heat or ice. Para cetamol had never done anything for me painwise. So she suggested Ibuprofen or voltarol gel but i understood that if you had lung problems then you avoided Nsaids so i mentioned again that I had a lung abcess in past and now classed as bronchiectasis and also had 2 PE in past 10 years and lungs are not good . Was I wrong in that ibuprofen is not good for us lungies.. Been told to go away for two weeks take paracetamol and use heat and ice then phone again if not improved. I was not impressed. So I am asking here what you think about voltarol and ibuprofen please.

I use voltarol but can’t take ibuprofen due to hiatus hernia. Pete has lung problems and has used voltarol too but doesn’t use ibuprofen. You can try a knee bandage used with a heat or cold pack perhaps. Might help.

I've had ibruprofen and ibugel for pain, doctors if they are suggesting that usually make you aware it can affect breathing so you just stop taking it if that happens, for short term use I have been ok with it in the past. I've been living with lung condition for a long time now.

For me the pain made me more breatheless and took more effort than ibugel and ibruprofen did. You can only try and see really.

For arthritic pain, I use a combination of creams and ointments as well as mainly paracetamol. Paracetamol alongside ibuprofen I wouldn't recommend, tends to make the brain go fuzzy and start slurring words (that's on full dose of each for 3 weeks).

Vicks vapo rub on the painful area, especially before bed if it is worrying you in bed.

Comfrey ointment / cream or oil 3 to 4 times daily on painful area.

Tiger balm others swear by.

Bee propolis ointment

Hot warm compress may help or cold whichever the pain responds to.

Keep on breathing easy and hope the pain improves soon.

I have severe osteoarthritis and Bkin as suggested most of alternative treatments I would have said. Obviously if the pain continues you need to go back to see your GP. From trial and error I found that my tens machine helps with the pain in my knee when set on a low massage setting.

Thank you . I do have an old tens machine (and a battery powered hand hekd one which is really painful to use!)

I have severe asthma and can take ibuprofen with no problems. Be aware too though that if you take it long term it can damage your kidneys

I use magnesium oil (in place of Voltarol) if have a lot of pain, especially during sleep.

I hadn't heard of it either - a fellow sufferer told me about it and said it's a much healthier alternative to Voltarol (I tried it and it works). Good luck with everything

I've taken nsaids for pain since my road accident in 1977. At present I take Etodolac which is a receptor specific nsaid as I have had some bad problems with Naproxen (severe bruising) and Ibuprofen (stomach issues).

Cocodamol are v effective.u may find supplement glucosame help longterm - the thereauptic dose is 1500mg daily.

IIIA/IIIB lung cancer survivor, had maximum radiation, 2 years chemotherapy, and a lobectomy ( removal of top right lung lobe ) . I still have COPD and am on oxygen 24/7 and I take 2, sometimes 3 ibuprofen every evening and have been doing so for at least 20 years. This is me though and it might not be for you, judg69
