A family friend has phoned me. His mother has been diagnosed with Emphysema and he is trying to find a pharmacy in Cornwall or Devon that stocks CBD oil with THC in it to provide some relief for her. A US friend said this had helped his father who had COPD. He’s been phoning pharmacies and health shops all morning without success. His mother is distraught. She is on blood thinners. She is refusing to be taken to hospital and of course it’s the weekend in UK so no helplines are available : (
If any of you have any suggestions I could share with him, I would be so grateful. I really feel for his Mum. She was told she had lung cancer earlier this year.
Thank you in advance for any advice.

I had to look up what you are asking about. CBD oil with THC is illegal in the UK, so no pharmacist will provide this. It is ok in some states in USA but not all. He maybe able to obtain CBD oil without THC but I would be very wary about taking any additional substance when someone is on another medication eg blood thinners. This is because there can be contraindications with prescribed medication.
If friends mother is struggling suddenly she maybe have a flare up and your friend should consider phoning 111 for advice.
Hi, I'm not 100% sure about this (someone will correct me if I'm wrong) but I think CBD containing THC is banned in UK. Plain CBD products are easily available in Health Food Shops as you've probably found out.
Its possibly available but not from 'conventional' pharmacies or outlets. My husband obtained tubs of it at £200 each for sometime before he died in 2010 as a cancer cure. It might have come from America where most of his pills & potions came from.
If it is illegal I'm sorry.. it's a shame the lady won't go to hospital because they would be able to alleviate her suffering .
Thank you for replying. Yes, I went to a local health shop and they said much the same. I’m sorry to hear about your husband dying. I hope he wasn’t in pain. It would be so much easier if it was legalised and available on prescription in the UK. Yes, I rang my friend and I could hear her in the background, upset but adamant no hospital. I don’t think she realises how worried her son is. I hope she changes her mind.
Hi daughterjerry - assuming your friend wanted to get hold of THC because his mother is unable to breathe properly, this would probably mean her airways are obstructed with inflammation and/or mucus. I cant tell you what should happen to make her feel better as we're not allowed to (and in any case we dont know all the details). But when Ive been like that I have used prednisolone, an oral steroid which works to decrease the inflammation which is causing the obstruction. If she wont go to hospital then she, or he, could ask her GP/consultant if a nebuliser would be appropriate - this is a piece of kit which enables you to breathe in medication which will dilate the airways along with the steam which the nebuliser produces. They can be provided when people are having a flare-up and need to get medication swiftly into their systems.
All this could be discussed with the 111 GP, and after the weekend, with her own GP, to see what is appropriate - so typical that these things always seem to happen at the weekend. Your friend's mother will need a care plan and may feel better when this is in place and she has some idea of what is needed to manage her particular manifestation of emphysema.
Thank you for your detailed and informative response. I will share these details and the others with my friend. I think starting with the 111 GP would be a great starting point this weekend ….it is typical about this happening on the weekend. I used to fear that when my own parents were poorly because access to help seems to fall away on Saturdays and Sundays. I felt we were alone many weekends as I did the best I could. A care plan and some measure of control will work wonders I suspect for this lady.
Possibly Holland and Barratt could have it, I know my local pharmacy in PENRYN usually have it, and I think the natural food shop in Falmouth does sell it, it's quite pricey, and uou can get cbd gummies too.Good luck
Thank you. He’s been very touched by everybody’s replies. I told him the people on this website are really helpful, kind & have ideas so please join it yourself : )
I live in a town near Bristol and we have a market in the Square every Thurs and there is a lady with a Genuine CBD stall Maybe tell im to try his markets .
it’s a shame that CBD has been so ostracised. I know I could have done with something to take away the pain I have from seven spinal fractures. I don’t want to be really doped up by prescribed medication as I only get pain when I do things. So I need temporary relief to let me maybe wash up or prepare a meal without pain. I didn’t realise it could help with breathing. I think it should be legalised for medical people only not for public use as a whole.
I hope something comes along for your friends Mother.
in any case it’s all over the country illegally. This is why the Police do raids. Because of that the needy patients are deprived the relief they can get from CBD.
Thank you for replying. I think different things work for different people and it’s probably not ideal for all but I do wish our UK legislation and prescribing was more in line with other countries so people who use it medically can get their relief without the stress of breaking the law.
Thank you. I phoned all the big names pharmacies in the area and one that rhymes with Hoots actually does have it but to obtain it a prescription from a Consultant is necessary so I have also relayed this info to my friend for his mother. He said he ll follow up with her Consultant tomorrow - fingers crossed. The other big name pharmacies had either closed (it was after 1pm on a Saturday when nobody gets poorly in the UK - sigh ) or were not answering.
Hi, i used CBD for a long time. Try the Hemp Company, a not for profit organization. They are based in Edinburgh but buy online and they send out in 24 hours. They have many different types. I had to stop as it thins the blood and i already take blood thinners so you need to check your meds. I did get pretty good results from the 1000 strenth.
Hello daughterjerry, sadly your freinds son has to respect his mothers wishes and if they ring 111 an ambulance will be sent out due to the nature of the patients illness and they will support the son but still have to respect patients wishes. The drug she wants cannot be got here in UK however there are other alternatives opiods like oramorph can help breathing but need a prescrition from out of hours at the weekend. I should not tell you this but I sense your concern for her sons well being I speak from experience of similar circumstances of family at home with serious illness . Most Gps will take into account the carers need too. Insisting on certain medication can be prohibiting when considering what you are allowed on the NHS. I hope your freind finds an answer as quick as possible.
CBD can be useful but it is not a wonder cure all:
It is possible that CBD can be used to treat symptoms of COPD. But most research about its efficacy for COPD is either preliminary or inconclusive. There are also side effects of using CBD that may outweigh the benefits, especially if you are a person who already has lung inflammation as the result of COPD.21 Jun 2021
As this lady has been diagnosed with cancer the Hospice Care charities , such as Macmillan, Sue Ryder, etc. can help with advice and support about managing pain and care at home. They can liaise with GPs and Hospitals.
All the best to her and her family at such a difficult time.
As others have said cbd oil with psychoactive ingredients in is illegal here.id b inclined to ring 111 or gp today,he should ask about ihss referral too - intensive home support service for copd patient. They can be called to assess her + try keep her at home.its very kind of u to watch out for them xxx
