I saw my lung specialist last month ,and he told me to get a recuse pack of antibiotics and steroids from my doctor, unfortunately i believe the doctor I see most times is very ill ,so unfortunately I had to see another doctor after a four week wait,I asked him for a recuse pack of antibiotics and steroids with a very angry and fruitrated voice he said it's a new law that's just come out no more antibiotics and steroids,I said to him I shall telephone my Lung specialist he said do what you want.so I rung the specialist to speak to his receptionist,she them telephone the surgery which within 2 hours I received the antibiotics and steroids, problem is now I have had a lung infection and had to use the recuse pack and worried in case they won't give me another recuse pk.

I am anyway thinking of changing surgery if my doctor dose not come back.,as it seems if I need a doctor they tell me to go the the walk in center,I have to be extra careful as I don't have a spleen.,I have noticed with other patients they look into finding an early appointment.

You should get your consultant to write to the GP to tell them to make sure that you always have a rescue pack on repeat. Make sure that a copy of the letter is sent to you. If you have any trouble getting this from the GP, who should have read the letter, take the letter to the practice manager and tell them that you are starting the complaints procedure. This usually concentrates the minds!

How stupid does your GP think that you are to try to tell you that there is a law banning rescue packs of abs and steroids!

Your GP surgery is a service which is meant to be there for you, not as a diversion stream to the walk in centre. If I was you I would be asking around to find a more professional and caring practice.

Thank you so much little pony ,I shall definitely ring my lung specialist to send me a letter as it's really getting me down as my doctor who is ill ,he is the head of the other doctors and he is such a wonderful person,I knew while he's away I would have problems with the other doctors.

I am asking around about other surgery although there quite a distance, but in my case I do need to find a more professional and caring doctor.

It was decided some time ago by the NHS to introduce the scheme of having emergency packs of antibiotics and steroids at home to cut down hospital admissions during exacerbations. I went to chase up a prescription. 2 years ago and was told by a receptionist that my request had been declined. After 55 years at the same practice I signed at a new one the same day. Glad you challenged the GP for what he said.

Hi littlepom ,I have just telephoned my lung specialist sectariay regarding a copy to the GP and she told me she has already sent a letter to the GP and any more problems I just have to get in touch with her ,she also suggested if my doctor dose not return to the surgery,it would be better if I looked out for another surgery.

That’s good news. The consultants’ secretaries can be so helpful. Consultants do not like GPs ignoring or going against their instructions but sometimes it is up to us to put them under the GPs nose. This should be put on your record now so that it is automatic. I order mine through the online Parient Access and have never had a problem. I agree with the sec though that if your GP doesn’t come back to look for a better doctor.

I havent got a lung specialist as I didn't qualify for a lung reducton she discharged me from clinic !!!!!!

Great reply from littlepom so I just want to wish you well and say you are totally entitled to your rescue pack when required. Some doctors need a stern talking to and shouldn’t tell fibs.

I would make a complaint against you dr .He blatantly lied to you witch would consequently put your health at risk especialy if you had to wait for a appointment to get antibiotics and steriods. But if you are unhappy with your dr's then i would look for a different one (after you put in the complaint)

I mean make a offical complaint against the dr. Thear is no law saying you can't have rescue packs. His lie put your health at risk.

Thank you Corriena,I believe it's been sorted out with this GP ,I honestly think he thought I would not have reported him ,but I was more afraid of my health or any fail person goes to him and he doesn't help them.🌻

Hi you might be better off asking your respiratory nurse at the surgery as they seem to have more common sense than many doctors! For example I asked a doctor about a pneumonia jab. She refused and got annoyed and said they are only given to those who have had at least 3 bouts of pnuemonia in the past. When I next asked my nurse she tut tutted and immediately gave me one

If I was you I would try reordering another rescue pack now and see what happens. I do this when I run out of mine and never have any problems. x

But I shall see if I can see the respiratory nurse ,my cousin has fabulous doctors very caring.its quite a few kilometres away.

The respiratory nurse may be a good option until you know if your GP is coming back. You can tell her to read the letter in front of you. She will probably have to get a GP to sign the prescription but she will probably be abe to get it put on your repeat list.

If you do go to the walk in centre make sure you inform them that your GP refuses to give you a rescue pack. The letter they sent my own following my visit was very condemning of his actions. I now have no problems.

just one thought on changing your GP, you must bare in mind that the new surgery must be within the area to do home visits if necessary.

After years of access to rescue meds my GP (who is brilliant!) has stopped giving them due to a minority using them like 'smarties'. As he said 'if you aren't well I want to know' I look after a disabled husband and my GP does everything he can to keep me well! I sometimes have a 'lung listen' if I'm not sure but haven't had an infection for over 2 years. Thankfully our practise has walk in surgeries every weekday morning so I personally don't worry too much about the lack of meds. I worry more about the overuse of antibiotics and the effects of that on the population in the future if no new alternatives are in the pipeline.

I can understand the reason why people do. It's catch 22 do you take them as a preventative measure or wait. No one wants to be seriously poorly and I've been tempted in the past. Where I live there is a high level of lung illnesses so it is bound to happen with a minority.

Hi Susan 1200, so sorry you’ve had problems getting the medication you need. I hope the secretary was able to send you a copy of the letter that was sent to the GP? The consultant secretaries can be wonderful. I had a problem getting access to the right medication through my GP a couple of years ago. My physio at the time was very concerned and gave me the phone number of the local community pharmacist who came to see me at home. She was brilliant and after looking at my notes put all the medication that I needed on my repeat prescription so that I can order it myself. This was such a relief as I had had to make an official complaint against the surgery which was very stressful. But now I only go to the GP if I really have to. Hope you manage to get it sorted x

Thank you 3girlsmama 🌻I never knew the Pharmacist could help with prescriptions ,I thought it was just up to the doctor.

I try not to visit the doctor if possible., unfortunately my lovely doctor is isick and it's not sure he will come back,after my experience with the doctor I saw I never want to see a doctor again, very rude ,and unprofessional.
