Good morning Vickynaish,

I had not heard of it but see that it is a treatment for many various health problems. Are you taking it and is it working for you?

Treatment and prevention of Pneumocystis jiroveci (P. carinii) pneumonitis.

Treatment and prophylaxis of toxoplasmosis

Treatment of nocardiosis.

Acute uncomplicated urinary tract infection

Acute otitis media

Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis

Good wishes:-)

Morning Jennifer,

Yes I am taking them for emphysema as well as nebuliser ventolin, hypertonic and antibiotics through the men, can't say any of its working to be honest. Getting a lot of side effects from the septrin though.

Hello Vickynash. I had this antibiotic quite a lot in the 1970s and 80s for bronchiectasis exacerbations. It used to be given more generally for urinary infections. It seems to have been replaced in treatment by more modern drugs.

Hi still standing

Did you get any side effects from them as I am getting quite a few. X

in reply to Vickynaish

They weren't very nice. I had stomach cramps and once I was given a generic version which resulted in me having hallucinations that I was floating. Needless to say I didn't take it again. There should be something different that your doc could give you. I suggest that you get your GP to have your sputum tested for the bacteria in there. Then you can have the appropriate antibiotic. It isn't effective against pseudomonas which I have in my lungs. Good luck.

Thanks still standing, I have pseudomonass in mine too. X

in reply to Vickynaish

then you may as well be taking sweets as septrin.Ciprofloxin is the only oral antibiotic which is truly effective against pseudo. Some take clarithromycin but I have not had that because of interaction with heart drugs I take. The nebulised abs for pseudo are colomycin, and tobramycin. Unfortunately I cannot tolerate these in my lungs but do very well nebulising ceftazidime which my consultant prescribes and the hospital delivers. It looks as though, like many of us, you are going to have to educate your GP. X

Thanks it was the consultant that prescribed the septrin will have to contact him. Thanks for your help

in reply to Vickynaish

I'm really surprised that a consultant prescribed septrin. Hey ho. At least you can ask some searching questions now.

I remember this antibiotic from the 1970's too. My daughter, who was born in 1971, was prescribed it during her childhood, but I can't remember what for. However she was allergic to it. I would also have thought that it would have bee replaced by more modern ones.

Hi Vicky

I took this about 30 years ago for a chest infection and woke up one morning with my feet itching like mad and covered in a rash. At first I thought it was an allergic reaction to my hot water bottle 😂.

I saw my consultant recently and he asked if I was allergic to any antibiotics. When I said septrin he raised his eyebrows and said 'that's an old one'. So I guess it's not used much any more.

X

There used to be septrin powder to put on cuts too, in the 70s.

I was given an antibiotic called septrin many years ago. It was a time when lots of adults had measles and I thought I must have due to the rash I had. Had to send for a doctor when my eyes became painful. Turned out to be a very severe reaction to the tablets and had to have injections to send my blood back which had come to the surface to cool down. Only mentioning this to watch for a rash and if one does occur to get help immediate, obviously not everyone does react that way . Joyce

Hi I had Septrin in the 1970's and was allergic to them. I came out in wide spread large blisters. So I've not had them since.

Same here, came out in rash from head to toe, spent the night in the bath with baking soda!! That was after one tablet.

I remember in the late 70's that some people in the States were dying with Septrin, also Bacterim. I had a bad reaction then and if I remember correctly they took it off the market in the US.

I know it's the first allergy I mention as it was so severe. I was only in my late teens. I had blisters all over

It's an old antibiotic but useful, it's still the drug of choice for a very nasty bug, S.maltophilia. Lots of people cannot take it, like others I had it often in the 70s, until I developed a widespread itchy & blister-like rash. Although I stopped Septrin straightaway I had to take antihistamines for several years before it went away. Never again! Levofloxacin is another antibiotic for S.maltophilia, but unfortunately resistance is increasing 😕
