Antibiotics

When my bronchiectasis gets worse I take Doxycyline capsules twice a day.

Is there a better antibiotic I can request my doctor for my condition ?

Thank you.

Hi there, I have asthma as well as Bronchiectasis and I take Azithromycin 3 times a week all the time. I have an anti biotic called avelox as my emergency med.

Hi Katria. The antibiotic you need depends on the bug in your lungs at the time. Your GP should send a sample off to be tested. However, quite often we bronchs have our samples come back as clear when by looking at it you can tell that there is something in there. I have never had doxy because my consultant does not think it will suit me. It might be a good idea to ring your bronch specialist's ( I do hope you have one). secretary and either arrange an appointment to discuss ir or get them to tell your GP which ab to change you to. Unfortunately most GPs know very little about bronch but are reluctant to admit it. They tend to treat it like COPD but it is completely different. I hope that helped.

My gp knows about bronchiectasis. Ask your GP for co-amoxiclav.

I take advairctwice a day spiriva once a day n both very expensive. I carry an emergency pump spray. Unfortunatly I am allergic to most all antibiotics except cerofax..don't remember name! But was hospitalized several times from pneumonia n my O2 going down to 73..n blp70/50 my said I looked dead. Rushed to hosspital n in ambulance pushed their O2 up to 10 to get me to 80.times I am afraid to go to sleep.most nights I wear those face grippers that stick on your face over the Rubicon your cheek .they are strong n hard to get off but worth it. .when I got to hospital they put me on a full faced cpac machine. Omg so dehydrating.but it helped . I can't do IV's my arms swell up like big legs within 10 min. N I tell them but the are sure they can do it. I can only have a pick line ..n it's a lot less painful because they use ultra sound n illidocaine first . and u are covered . all very sanitary ..very important. Good luck namaste

Thank you. It was my specialist who prescribed my medication but it may be time for a change so I will contact her for a new consultation.

good idea Kattria, with bronch it is a case of hide and seek with the gunk goblin. I hope your doc finds an ab which helps more.

I have had co-amoxyclav on several occasions. Again, it only works against specific bugs.

I took doxy daily for about two years. It cut down the number of infections I had, but after having both a chest and sinus infection since the end of February that weren't cleared up with 3 different antibiotics, my consultant changed me to me to azithromycin and I was clear of infection within a week. I have amoxicillin in my rescue pack.

Thank you Helen. I might ask my doctor for amoxicillin to see if it clears the infection at a faster rate. I try to keep as active as possible doing some of the pulmonary exercises they did at a course.

I have Azithromycin 3 times a week and Amoxycillin in my rescue pack, however have also had Doxycycline, it depends which bug comes up in your sputum test doesn't it?

My GP always gives me double dose Clarythromicin. My consultant told me last week that this was a good choice as it has an added anti-inflammatory effect. I've never heard this before but he seemed pleased.

Hi Kattria

That one ab is better than another - it really doesn't work like that. It all depends on what bugs you are growing in your lungs and this should show up in a sample, and will also tell which ab the bugs are sensitive to.

eg: you can grow strep p, which is a gram positive bacterium and may well be sensitive to amoxil, whereas you may grow a gram negative which will probably need a different family of abs.

Azithromycin is often used as a prophylactic medication, often 1 3 times a week (a different dose than would be used as a treatment). Many people with bronchiectasis find them beneficial and report less frequent infections. I'm intolerant to them but for you it might be worth a mention to your consutant if you have frequent infections.

Good luck

Hi, as others have said we're all different.. I take doxycillan daily with amoxicillin as rescue if infection present. Hoping this cuts down the number of infections. It seems to be trial and error seeing what works. Good Luck
