Hi there, I was on seretide (250mg/ morning & evening ) inhaler, montelukast (evening)tablets, Ventolin (when needed)and antihistamines for almost 2 years (since end 2021) taking all as prescribed. (Had childhood asthma’s (well managed.. becotide/ ventolin used on and off sporadically but not consistently). My asthma got worse during 2021 and hence prescribed the above by the lung specialist. Had voice and throat issues (from seretide even though rinsing after each use). Around November last year I started to develop stomach issues which were progressively getting worse that at one stage I thought I would end up in A&E. . Certain foods that I could previously eat were now affecting me. I began to wean off the antihistamines (stopped abruptly first, but broke out in rash and severe itching). In Jan this year, I decided to go gluten and dairy free, had an endoscopy done in Feb (showed a lot of inflammation) and began to wean off the montelukast over the next 3-4 months. Ruling out certain foods, my stomach began to improve. I would say I am sensitive to the medication but would be interested to see if anyone else has or had similar experience with stomach issues from taking asthma medication long term?

Seretide and Montelukast side effects
Quite a few members have acid reflux or silent reflux. Many of us take something like Omeprazole to calm the stomach acid from inflaming stomach and esophagus (where the acid bubbles up), we take it either because we have reflux or to prevent reflux symptoms from medication. I take 10mg Omeprazole, a low dose but for me does the job.A few years ago my Seretide was changed to Fostair, brilliant for the side effects I had but of course we're all different.
Thanks, it’s something I tried initially and worked, but didn’t want to stay on long term. Will look at possibilities of changing the seretide . Thanks.
Forgot to say, my asthma took a downturn in my mid 50s, I began montelukast 11 years ago, no side effects to report. I've also take Carbocysteine - a mucolytic since then. I've resigned myself to a combination inhaler as my asthma is here to stay. As I take a lot of vitamins and supplements I worry more about my liver 🙃 so stagger them throughout the day (with a little food).
My first endoscopy in 1979 long before asthma reappeared and have avoided acid &/or fatty foods and processed foods ever since. As I mentioned we are all different, we have to mostly advocate for ourselves to find what best for us. Take care and good luck. P
Hi. I’ve been on Seretide 250 (morning & night) for about 15 years. I don’t recall having any stomach issues, and it usually controls my asthma pretty well, however, I have ended up with throat problems.
It’s like you always need to clear your throat, very frustrating!
I’ve tried all the mouth rinsing and it didn’t help.
I also raised this with my GP but they didn’t want to know. Even when I said that Seretide can have some nasty side effects.
Thanks, I think my stomach issues were possibly related to a combination of my meds, but more so the montelukast. I know the throat issues are related to the seretide as I developed voice issues shortly after starting it, but what ever I tried didn’t help much and also fell on deaf ears. I feel your frustration as sometimes I’ve no power in my voice and even lost it on a couple of occasions during talking in meetings at work. I’ve now tried drinking water (read it somewhere) after rinsing and gargling and after washing my teeth each time and that helps somewhat. Unfortunately have to deal with it as best we can.
omg this is so interesting Xedoc I have been on asthma meds for a long time may years I am on duoresp 320/9 which I take 2 in the mornings x 2 at nights, salamol if required, montelukast one every night and fexofenadine 180 each morning besides Atorvastatin and amplodapine . My asthma has got worse since 2020 and takes ages after each attack to recover. I too have had some awful tummy trouble yet to be diagnosed. Such awful cramping pain nausea and and not sure if I pass out or drop off to sleep I end up hugging a hot water bottle with a bowl nearby. It used to last an hour but now up to 5 hours and repeats over the next few weeks before calming down . It has shown inflammation through blood tests and normal cysts on kidney and liver from ultra sound at alarming sizes but not a cause for the pain. I’ve just been told a number of times to go to a&e but I haven’t been I hurt too much to move . I have spoken and seen the doctors a few times . I have tried changing my diet too by cutting out white carbs and do feel healthier but not sure yet if that’s an answer. It is the first time I’ve heard a possible link next time I will ask the medics . Thankyou for sharing
I have only been Asthmatic for 13 years. However my brother for 40 years. He has had no side effects from using asthma meds. Like me always inhaler controlled.I guess they ruled out ulcers?
No ulcers Wodie and no other health issues. I’ve had asthma since the age of three and now in my late 50’s. I’ve had minor reactions to becotide which I was prescribed years ago and was able to come off that when I moved abroad to a less damp climate. So I know I can be sensitive to medication. Roll on a couple of decades and the asthma seems to have gone down hill during COVID which also coincides with moving into a new airtight house in 2021 (I keep the windows open to ensure air circulation). After 2 years it seems to be improving.
There is a facebook group named Montelukast (singulair) side effects support and discussion group. They have a lot of helpful information on there.
