Can I ask what medication people sheilding in Scotland are on? I have just spoken to an asthma nurse on the asthma uk WhatsApp chat who said I am CEV however my gp surgery have said I am not? I take seretide 250 one puff twice a day, 1 montelukast tablet per night, ventolin as and when required and have had 5 courses of prednisolone in the past 12 months.
Just trying to gauge where I stand!

I'm not in Scotland am in the UK. But our medications are very similar and I am in the CEV category and receive the shielding letters so not sure why you wouldn't be considered the same 🤔🤔
I’m not sure if the Scottish CEV categories are different because everyone else I have seen on my medication are shielding. I work for the NHS in a hospital so quite nervous. My GP surgery didn’t sound very concerned when I phoned to ask.
Strange! I'm a nurse so yeah it's worrying times. Maybe go back to GP and show them the guidance Asthma UK put out about CEV

I live in Scotland too. I take 2 puffs of Symbicort twice a day, Montelukast at night, was on Uniphyllin for two months but didn’t help at all and stopped it now. Also Bricanyll as a reliever inhaler. My peak flow has been at 120 for a year and only improves when on Prednisalone which I am currently on 10mg a day as a maintenance dose as asthma was so unstable. Was booked in for a CT Scan of my lungs this Friday which has been cancelled. I have never received a shielding letter. I was also wondering which category I would come under for Covid vaccine but will just have to wait and see. Think we have a long wait ahead of us. Keep well and safe everyone. X
Have you contacted your gp to ask about it? From what I can see I think Scottish CEV guidelines are different and you seem to fit the criteria. Has your daily prednisolone been started after the first lockdown? My Gp surgery are so rude and don’t want to listen. Sorry to hear about your scan it’s so frustrating just now with appointments being cancelled, especially ones which seem essential. I have had my first vaccination but my pre-booked 2nd one has been cancelled due to the new 12 week schedule. Not sure how I feel about that!
HiSurely if you have already had the vaccine and it’s had 2-3 weeks to do it’s thing then you won’t be classed as CEV anyway??
But maybe I’m missing the point....🤔🤔

HiYep but that’s the whole point of this Covid vaccine and why they want as many people vaccinated ( esp in the high risk groups) as quickly as possible.. to remove that risk. That’s how all vaccines work...??
Yes I know that I’m just saying I don’t think the nhs or government have set out any guidelines for people classed as CEV who have had the vaccine as of yet because it’s all so new.
HiWell I think it’s fairly clear from medical and government advice where this vaccine fits in...eg. Old people’s homes - once they ( and their carers) have been given the vaccine they are allowed visitors etc and are no longer being classed as CEV.
Also it is for this reason ( and quite rightly) that as a frontline NHS worker you have presumably already had your vaccine...? To protect you and make you not as vulnerable to the virus??
CEV is a term that refers specifically to Covid.. so now you have had the vaccine why would you still be CEV to it?
Sorry - but it stands to reason that you are no longer as vulnerable to this disease as many other people are.. thanks to the vaccine.

Totally get and agree with you. But I cannot find any nhs or government information that has any advice on CEV and having the vaccine in regards of sheilding or not. Do you have any links?

But in fairness I wouldn’t think it’s top of the priority list for governments atm.. so few people have had the vaccine, so there probably is no advice yet.
Best to ask your occy health dept for clarity.
That said i still cannot see any reason for you to shield as you have had the vaccine.

I too work for the NHS, our occupational health department has advised those who are CEV and who have had the vaccine still have to shield
HiThat’s interesting... thanks. But what is the point of rushing out the vaccine to CEV people then if they still have to shield anyway?? That would mean shielding would need continue until we gain herd immunity whenever that might be?
Also doesn’t make sense with care home residents either.. those vaccinated are now receiving visits etc as before...

If you take a look at the latest shielding guidelines it also says to still shield if you’ve had both jabs
HiYes apparently it’s because they do not know whether people who have had the vaccine can still pass on the virus or not. Makes sense - I guess but means CEV are not going to be much better off in the short term and are a bit like guinea pigs for the vaccine effectiveness...🤷♂️🤷♂️

This is the Scottish Government's description of those who who would be classed as clinically extremely vulnerable: gov.scot/publications/covid... Long term steroid tablets is their definition - is 5 courses of Pred in 12 months considered "long term"? The NHS have a different definition, in that severe asthma is classed as CEV. nhs.uk/conditions/coronavir...
One thing is obvious, splitting hairs is a national pasttime of those in charge of our welfare.

It sounds like your asthma nurse believes that you should be CEV even though the government, and your GP surgery, does not.
It might be worthwhile speaking to your GP rather than their staff.

Hi I'm in Scotland and no idea what CEV is but I was a key worker got a text from Gov.uk to tell me to shield from Midnight a couple of days ago.. had to tell my boss who wasnt too happy, but supportive so am now using the remnants of my holidays for my days off... I am on Revlar Elipta, Spiriva and have had several courses of prednisolone as well as being in hospital about 3 times this year. When I read other guidelines it says I'm not high risk but now medium risk so thought I disnt need to shield. But apparently not the case now... not even sure what's going on I had my flu jab.. had to email about the covid one...but not heard anything about it yet.... thought being a key worker I'd be amongst the first but not sure what gives me higher priority atm....will get it when I get it I spose...just fed up right now... with Bill's pilling up etc....
It depends what type of keywords you are. If you're a care worker or work for the NHS then you should be hearing about getting the vaccine soon as these are the groups its being rolled out to just now
CEV means Clinically Extremely Vulnerable.
The fact that you’ve been in hospital three times this years probably pushes you into that category. Perhaps your doctor could confirm if this is the case.
Hi . I too work in a clinical role in health care and expect to get my vaccine very soon . I'm in England and currently shielding. I've just had a telephone consultation with my consultant who categorical said I should remain shielding even if I get my vaccine until the shielding period has ended and only then return to work after a full risk assessment on my role. She is going to put that in my clinic review letter , so I can show work if necessary. The volume of covid cases is a significant risk factor for me to safely return to work. Stay safe
