Hi I have hip and back pain due to wear and tear and have been given amitriptyline I’ve been taking 2 co codamol at night but my pharmacist has said I can only take these for 3 days but they work and I don’t take them any other time as my pain is terrible at night when I lay down I’ve heard the amitriptyline works for nerve pain but will they also work for arthritis in the hip and back as this is what I have

Before I had my knee - and hip - replaced - my GP prescribed Co-codamol….and although they can can be addictive for some, don’t think 2 at night (guess they are the lowest dose available) are going to cause any great issues. At that dose they shouldn’t cause too much in the digestive line either! But is pharmacist concerned about co-codamol and Amitriptyline?

Once my pain has gone post operations I stopped them no issues.

Amitriptyline does work for nerve pain, and quite a few people on the PMRGCAuk forum of which I am a member have been prescribed to help sleep…it’s best to take it around 7pm not when you go to bed, or it can make for drowsy mornings!

Have you look at versusarthritis site for more info - versusarthritis.org/about-a...

Have you tried Flexiseq - non drug -

Thankyou for replying I’ve not started the amitriptyline yet as I prefer the co codamol as it doesn’t make me sleepy the next day I work from 4pm till 9pm so wouldn’t be able to take the other till after 9pm wasn’t sure if it was any good for arthritis as it says on website for nerve pain which my dr thinks it’s sciatic but I know it’s arthritis in the hip as the pains in my groin and knee, and worse when I lay down at night, it’s not to bad during the day which is why I don’t need pain relief daytime just at night. I’ve been doing the flexiseq just started that so just on a trial,

Ok, I was prescribed amitriptyline for something else - and it was useless for that, but GP had diagnosis wrong, so no really surprise! But for the week or dk su took it, it made me feel awful next day - didn’t know about taking it earlier in evening then!

Good luck with flexiseq,

Thank you I think I’ll stick with the co codamol 👍

I’ve been on cocodamol every night (and occasionally daytime) for many years. The medical, and pharmaceutical professions are concerned about opioid drugs, which this is, and I believe it’s banned in the US. It does make you constipated.

Yea I know the pharmacist have to give you advice on taking these, but 2 a night I’m sure won’t hurt and if it helps with pain and sleep it’s worth it

Hi Harley , I have both of these drugs and find that amitriptyline relaxes me at night. Dependent on how much pain I am in I take cocodamol . I don’t know if the doctor prescribed it for you but if it was the pharmacy I would presume it would be the 8/500.

I have in the past used upto 2 of 30/500 solpsdol 4 times a day as prescribed by the doctor and I have also been prescribed many other strong painkillers.FIRST I would advise you to get a really good electric heat pad that you can lay on in bed or use hot water bottles or wheat bags to try a relax yourself to ease the pain. Try the amitriptyline that your doctor prescribed for you an hour or so before you go to bed . If you need it the cocodamol is always there in reserve but always discuss what you do with your doctor. There are side effects from both of these medications - constipation etc

I’ve only been using it for a couple of days but last night I was in that much pain I had to get up and take co codamol, it’s pain killer free but until it kicks in you need to take oral painkillers that’s what I found

I don't want to hijack this post, but Flexiseq was mentioned. I'm wondering does anyone find this any good at all. I'm thinking it it is very expensive snake oil?Any experience here?

It is expensive for sure…and it works well in some instances.

I used when it first came out, and thought the same as you, but now realise it wouldn’t…..my knee was bone-on-bone and no cartilage to lubricate.

Following knee, hip and shoulder replacements over 2 year period, I decided when second shoulder started showing the tell-take signs of OA, I’d give it another try.

Have to say, it seems to be working this time around, whether that’s because I still have enough cartilage/synovial fluid for it to work on or ingredients are different I’m not sure. But it does take a few weeks to work, and you need to apply as instructed.

Flexiseq was recommended by my physio and it does work to a certain extent on my knee.

Hmm…as I said, depends on state of joint I think.

The PRP injection was a hundred times better on the other hand.

I was prescribed Amitriptyline 10mg x 2 each night to help with sleeping due to the lower discs issue I have. This is on top of the Naproxen x2 a day and co codomol 30/500 x 2 a day I take. The first week on Amitiptyline I took 1 tablet a night to get used to the affects.

I must admit I have been getting the best night sleeps I have had for 2 years. Yes, feel a tad groggy next morning if taken after 9pm but at least Im now sleeping . Managed to sort out my constipation issues due to the Naproxen, Co-codomol and Omeprazole by taking a glass of Prune Juice (250ml) each morning,

That is brilliant that you are sleeping I took one Amitriptyline last night and co codamol and slept brilliant as well I have been told I can take up to 3 a night so will start slow when did you start on 2 or are you still on 1

mingsbeard profile image
mingsbeard in reply toHarley198

I did 6 nights on 1 tab then upped it to 2 on night 7. I must add that I also stopped them for some days as I had to do some early starts which involved driving and did not want the "groggy" feelings on those days days. I have also managed to reduce my intake of the Naproxen and Co-Codomol as I know I will get some relief from the Amitriptyline at night. I use those for any pain during the day which mostly falls on the days when I am less active.

I used to take amitriptylene for about 20years for depression but I was then taken off of it and given quetiapine instead. It may be a coincidence but since coming off of it my arthritic pain is so bad I take cocodamol at night and that helps me sleep. Perhaps the amitriptylene was helping with my arthritis without my knowing.

Harley198 profile image
Harley198 in reply toCutoff

The pain at night is awful but I’m hoping the Amitriptylene will sort it out I’ve read it can take 2 weeks to ease the pain but I can take other painkillers till then I’ve heard good reviews on the Amitriptylene anything must be better than this pain I’ll try anything lol

That’s worth knowing I work evenings so it’s ideal for me to take at 9pm then if I’m groggy in the morning I can relax till work, yea I was thinking of upping them after 7 days
