Seated exercise videos

BadlyDrawnBadger profile image

Morning! I've got advanced OA in my hip, waiting for a replacement, but would like to start doing some seated exercise to try and get my fitness levels up a bit as I get so out of breath even walking. I had a look on Apple Fitness (free trial) but the stuff for 'seniors' is still more than I could do with dancing around and lunges etc.

Has anyone come across good videos on youtube or similar that might walk me through a few exercises I could do without being in pain? I guess upper body strength stuff is ok, but I'd really like to improve my cardio fitness a little too.

Thank you!

I found the best exercise before my hip ops was swimming. You can exercise without being weight bearing which is really helpful. I did have to stagger back to the changing rooms though!!

Ah thanks - I’d love to but there’s no accessible pools near me and I def can’t get up and down a pool ladder! Hopefully get back to it once I’m fixed!

I can’t get up and down a ladder either. The pool I found has proper steps. In fact there is a hotel near here with a hydrotherapy pool and also there is a hospital that allows us to use their hydrotherapy pool.

I use utube.

Joe wicks for seniors, where he has some seated ones.

When you are in utube and looking through this sort of things you will come across others, like seated yoga.

If this gets you fitter, you can progress to Joe Wicks standing ones, or to Lucy Wyndham-Read.

My husband and I started, though, during Covid, with NHS ones, where you just get diagrams. Go to the NHS app and find “exercising for seniors”. After a few months this got too easy for us and we progressed to Joe Wicks.

hi I’d recommend yes2next on utube there are exercise sessions from 5 minutes to 20 with cardio and strength sessions and most are done by April and her mum who does most sessions seated ! I think versus arthritis do some too good luck x

I agree with the above, Versus arthritis does have some good videos especially Leon and his mum. I too have osteoarthritis (among other things) and can do very little of the exercises out there. Even swimming, although my issue is knees, caused incredible pain I wasn't expecting but I can walk about in the water - but getting to and from the pool and getting dressed afterwards is so difficult and exhausting I admit I don't go very often at all. If dressing isn't an issue at your pool I would recommend that and trying to do some stretches in the water (from the exercises you find) is much easier. I also found some seated tai chi and yoga online which I enjoyed but not sure about how appropriate for hips. I mainly enjoyed the time to myself and calm feeling that ensued after to be honest though.!

Some of the VersusArthritis ones turned out to be counterproductive for me, when I had a specific hip problem (as I thought) when it turned out to be a back problem. The VA ones were correct but had to be performed in a different way, in my circumstances.

And were too energetic!

Haha…I’m so not ready for energetic! I’ll have a look and see whether I think they’ll work for me. Hoping to talk some through when I have a physio appointment next month to make sure they’re helpful not hindering!

This Canadian fitness instructor, Jules, has a whole range of standing and seated videos for different levels, and from around 10 minutes to an hour long, on her Improved Health channel, which she started in lockdown . I found the seated ones really useful before my knee replacements. The whole range is here youtube.com/@ImprovedHealth...

And these are the seated ones:-

Seated Gentle Workouts (Level 1):-

Seated Beginner Workouts (Level 2):-

Seated Intermediate Workouts (Level 3):-
