my mom won’t put me on anxiety meds

hi everyone,

I’ve been struggling with terrible anxiety all my life. In the last 4 years I’ve been experiencing stress-induced psychosis. Anxiety has totally ruined my relationship with my family because I would be too anxious to sit with them and have them judging me. However despite all this my mother would not allow me to treat my anxiety with prescribed medication. What should I do?

Hi Lonergirl1. I see you are new to our community. I'd like to Welcome

you to a safe place to come for support. Are you 18 or over? Are you presently

under the care of a doctor for your Anxiety? This is something that needs to be

conveyed to your mother by a professional. Is there a family member that you

can trust in getting you the help you need? I hate to see you suffer unnecessarily.

I feel your emotional pain. :) xx

yes I’m over 18 but I’m my culture moms control everything 🥲. No I wasn’t honest with my doctor about how bad my anxiety is simply because I didn’t feel comfortable being too open about it. A part of me didn’t want him to think I’m some sort of freak. Which I realize now is kind of rediculous…

Hi Lonergirl1, I understand that culture can play a very big role in getting the help

you may need. Being open and honest with your doctor is important in getting the

issue addressed. Right now you are stuck between a rock and a hard place and I

feel for you. Remember that doctors don't judge. Their Oath is to take care of

their patients. More and more doctors are understanding of mental health disorders.

This is a very delicate situation for you. I still feel you need a 3rd party to intervene

for you between your doctor and your mother. Please keep posting on this site,

you can't be the only one in this position. Others can reach out to you and let you

know how they handle their own issue involving culture. I care :) xx

Do you know what your mother’s concern is? Is it drug safety? Or does she think there’s a stigma with anxiety? Either way lean on your doctor. He or she can assure your mom these drugs have been used for many years and are safe when taken as prescribed. Your doctor can also explain how anxiety is an illness, not just mental but physical. It can lead to other health problems if untreated. Keep at it and good luck.

After reading some of the comments, and replies, I think I would recommend looking online for a "virtual doctor" who can prescribe medication to you. They do it very discreetly, and will work with your budget. I did this when I had no insurance, and no money, and got meds for $25 a month.

I was so embarassed to go to doctors for years. I was afraid, but after the first visit I got help, meds, and someone to listen to me and felt better.

Sorry you are going through this. But, as an adult you have rights, and can seek help if you need it. There are lots of options for you, but know it will be ok :)

My heart goes out to you! You don’t say how old you are but, if you are still at school try speaking to a school councellor or teacher about your feelings, they are trained in talking to student’s about their problems. If you are older - firstly, why is your mother dictating how you treat yourself? Secondly, make an appointment with your GP / Primary Care doctor and speak to them about your symptoms explain your mother’s stance and see what they have to say.

Unless your mother is a trained physician, even if she is, I assume she is not your doctor so should not be giving advice or commenting on your treatment! Take that first step to take control of your life! Good luck!
