I suffer with anxiety and health anxiety and I’d say to an extent it’s normal to worry about your health but not to the extent of constant reassurance when you’ve been diagnosed as fine and well. Each time I get a new symptom I worry the worst. Learn to try and accept that your body is only human and time will heal things that are real or not.

Once you’ve been diagnosed as well for that particular symptom try to switch off from it or it gets worse. Doctors see really ill people everyday and deliver bad news even when they don’t want to. So why would all of us be the exception ? When you sleep your body takes care of it’s self without your intervention. Your bladder tells you when you need the toilet , your body keeps its fragile temperature regulated , it breathes it’s self and pretty much runs it’s self without your or medical intervention. Symptoms are very hard to ignore but try to put up with them and ignore the worry side that tries to self diagnose or fix.

Hi,

Honestly, no :) I think several things got me there and I know you can get there too!

1) Attitude towards aging. I'm 51 now! There is no need to fear the inevitable: Aging, health issues, etc. I now see it all as part of life. It's normal to get sick sometimes and have health issues. Yes, some health-related things can be prevented, but some cannot.

2) Understanding my anxiety and how it works- and not fearing it (general recovery)

3) The words, "So Be It", which I repeat to myself endlessly when I feel at all anxious about anything- health or otherwise. Worst case scenario? So be it. Serious illness? So be it. Pain, disability, exhaustion from illness? So be it. Somehow I will get through.

4) I work with geriatric patients and hospice patients. I see death all the time. People are incredibly comfortable, at peace, and surrounded by loved ones.

5) I'm in healthcare. I understand most health-related issues in general. Knowledge is power. I had far more health anxiety when I was younger/before I went into healthcare and everything was such a mystery.

6) My faith in a Higher Power. I believe in the after life. Why fear health issues or death when we are only here such a short time- and once we leave, we live on in paradise?

I hope this helps encourage you!

What are the things that will get you to that next step where you overcome your health anxiety?

Thank you Calm_mama your words are precious!

Many people said that as you age you develop a calmer attitude toward things.
