I have a new job starting soon, a promotion. I was asked to apply, got the job and everyone has been really welcoming. Yet I feel like they've got the wrong person for the job. I don't think I have any of the skills they want and worry I'm annoying. Keep having panic attacks. I start in a few weeks. Why do I play these tricks on myself?

New job
Hi lindypalm
Congratulations on your new job, you did really well to get it. You wouldn't have got it if they didn't think you have the skills for it.
You have an unrealistically negative view about yourself which could be difficult to challenge as it may well go back to childhood but it is incorrect and will add to your anxiety.
Try to feel really pleased with yourself for getting the job and cut yourself some slack.
It is the same issue with worrying about being annoying to others. Just take it slowly, be happy to be quiet at first and listen and ask questions rather than try to make any sort of impression. Everyone feels exactly like you do when they are new and the others will understand what you are going through. I tend to try to focus on the job and not worry about how I am getting on socially as that is secondary to what you are there for. This should take the pressure off.
It is worth trying to note down alot of the new things you are told so you can look back at your own notes to help you remember.
Good luck, you did great to get the job and you will also soon be able to do a great job, just give yourself time.

Congratulations and well done. Anxiety causes one to seek approval and reassurance from others. So press on and enjoy your new role. It will hopefully pass.
