Seeing my moms heart stop created a new fear

My mom has been in the hospital and her heart stopped right in front of me. I saw all the nurses doing cpr and it was the scariest thing I’ve ever witnessed. My mom is doing better now but just last night I started panicking that my heart was gonna stop. I guess this all got triggered cause I’ve been sleeping in my chest and my chest has been hurting probably as a result of this. I just get worried and I don’t know how to stop it. I know my heart is healthy because I had a sonogram at a cardiologist last year. Does anyone else have this fear and how do you stop it so you’ll get some sleep haha

Hi, sorry to hear about your mum hopefully she's continuing to improve. I too had this anxiety regarding my heart stopping and my dyeing in my sleep but I had to rationalize it and make myself see that my body has been in control of my heart from the day I was born and it knows what to do, if you have been checked out for any heart issues and got the all clear you will be fine. I made my bed a place of rest and tried to relax and enjoy my bed time, maybe try some general relaxing music or meditation on YouTube. Take care. X

Sydney, this isn't about you it's about your mother.

She has a heart problem, you don't have a heart problem. And you have the result of a Sonogram to prove you don't have a heart problem.

It was very traumatic to be present when your mother's heart stopped, you won't forget that in a hurry.

Your worry that you have a heart problem like your mother is due to anxiety or more accurately due to some sensitisation of your nervous system.

Hope your mother recovers well.

Sydney,

this kind of "trauma" has been reported to respond very well to a therapy called EMDR.

IT also has been reported to respond to EFT. ( emotional freedom technique) or tapping.

Perhaps Look into those and see if either one resonates with you.

The sooner you address it the sooner you get relief.
