So I’m not on any anxiety medication and I never drink alcohol but I’m going away for a weekend with my partner and my mam said to have a glass of red wine to help me relax.
Does this actually help or will my anxiety start to feel worse once the effect of the wine wears off?
Thank you in advance!

I read that a glass of wine is ok. But usually more than two alcoholic drinks can actually activate the sympathetic nervous system which usually turns the fight or flight on and gives anxiety. I was surprised to find this out.
I have never found that drinking any amount of wine is bad for anxiety. It certainly combats anxiety while you're drinking it, that's why lots of people with anxiety become alcoholics. I also find it has a calming effect the following morning.
That's me, we're all different, if others say it affects their anxiety in a bad way then that's true for them.
Why take a chance? Is it that important to have it? You seem to be dealing with your body chemistry rather well at the moment; why screw with a good situation. Wine and other alcoholic drinks are legal drugs If you are receiving medical care for your anxity, call the doctor and ask.
The risk would be dependency. Maybe the wine helps you relax, but then you start relying on it. In the end, if you were to become dependent, your anxiety would get worse.
Alcohol and drugs of any sort, including caffine, inhibits your brains ability to regulate hormones on it's own, like the "feel good" hormones.
A glass of wine 2-3 times a week probably would be fine, but if you feel yourself needing it, or thinking, "man, I really need a glass of wine!!" after a stressful day, then it may be good to take a step back from it.
