Getting worried

So I was doing pretty good until I stumbled across the documentary 'American addict'. It talks about the negative long term effects of psychotropic medications. I've been on meds for about 15 years and now I'm worried. Is my future health screwed because of these meds? I can't stop thinking about it now.....

It really all depends on which psychotropic meds you take and what your illness is. I'd like to watch this documentary now! From what I personally have seen as a psych nurse, the psychotropic meds with the greatest risk for long term effects are antipsychotics. I am not a doctor, so I can't tell you specifically the long term effects of antidepressants or anti-anxiety meds like benzodiazepines, but the risk with antipsychotics is mainly Tardive Dyskinesia, which can happen after long-term use at high dosages.

I would google as much info as I could about the various different types of psychotropic meds. It's a very broad category, so it's important to really understand the meds YOU take. Also, remember that the creators of a documentary have an agenda. I'd probably look into that documentary and try to analyze the agenda of its creators. It may help ease your worries.

Best of luck!
