I can fall asleep but I jolt up gasping for air then when I am awake I am ok!

Anxiety is a strange thing. I have terrible external shakes and I feel really bad at the moment. Hate the mornings! You have to realise (as myself has to realise) that all of this is just anxiety. Deep breathing and try to relax. It will go eventually.
I feel that you have anxiety and that you've had it for quite some time. The symptoms you describe are definitely part of anxiety. You would very much benefit from seeing a GP to confirm what I think because I COULD of course be wrong.
Anxiety generally appears when a person worries about future concerns. The more a person worries, the stronger the anxiety becomes until it is chronic. Therefore, think back to when these symptoms first started. What was happening in your life at the time? What were your thought patterns like? Did you experience excessive (acute) worry?
Anxiety can be easily treated so please put your mind at ease. Visiting a GP to get a physical check will further aid peace of mind.
