I have been prescribed citalopram for depression and anxiety ( caused or at least exacerbated by the awful side effects of meds taken for acid reflux. ) Now frightened to take citalopram in case that too has awful side effects dr said if I feel like this I probably will have side effects. Going nuts any advice please.

Hi did u ask your doctor if you'll be prone to side effects to this med since you were sensitive to the others??

I would give it ago give it it's time to take effect and if it doesn't work then try another?

Also don't read the side effects if your anxiety will make you feel those symptoms, that's advice from my doctor when I was doubting all my anxiety meds. :) good luck

I did ask him about my possible hypersensitivity to all meds ( although in the past I have taken things and not had any bad side effects).but he didnt really have an answer. Unfortunately I already knowthe possible side effects. He also said Imust take 20 mgs per day as I suggested trying 10mgs but I notice on reading info leaflet it says 10-20mgs

starting dose for over 65s ( I am 66) so wondering whether to try 10mgs anyway as some of the 20mg tabs can be split in two. Dont know how I have got into such a state. particularly jittery today as didnt get enough sleep due to buzziing in ear from tinitus. Do you think I might just continue with therapy which I have been going to for a couple of weeks.

Hi Annie I'm 65 I started on citalopram10mg end of nov I had a few side effects feeling sick, headaches and not being able to sleep. Take care xx

Hi

I too take citalopram, there are side effects but majority settle down after 2 weeks. I found it was worth sticking with them

Hi Annie,

I was on citalopram for 4 years, for the first couple of weeks i felt a bit sick, trouble sleeping and have a metallic taste in my throat. But then once it had settled down and these effects done, it calmed me down a lot, it doesnt rule out anxiety although but I could do the everyday things i used to get anxious about and it really helped with my performance at uni and work - I even managed to do a presentation in front a broad of directors!. I came of them last year after finishing uni, this was because even though citalopram helped alot it also made me feel numb, i never felt happy.

Unfortunately some of my symptoms have returned again and i have been prescribed something else. I hope this helps - if theres any more questions let me know :)

l tried citalopram just 10mgs for only 2 days and the side effects were so severe I had to stop ( nausea of a severity that I have never experienced and headaches.) It has taken three days for the effects to wear off and I now feel very very jittery and anxious. Have tried deep breathing etc but cant manage to calm myself down)
