Does anyone else unintentionally harm themselves when they are in awkward situations or when you feel uncomfortable in any situation.
when this happens to me i start clawing/scratching at my skin which usually takes a few layers of skin off and bleeds a little. some worse cases have left me with scars.
I cut my fingernails down to reduced the likelyness of hurting myself too much but it never really help.
Does anyone know any other techniques to calm themselves down in a non hurtful way.

Have you tried distraction techniques e.g. Listening to music or art therapy. You could put all your frustrations and anger on to paper either by drawing or writing down your feelings. Self harm is very common and is normally a cry for help. Have you spoke to your doctor or there may be a group in your area where you can discuss your problems with like minded people. Look after yourself
I've been taught stress techniques and small exercises to calm myself down. and yes the doctor referred me to a specialist. i had a few sessions they said they'd be in contact and never were.
Have you tried wearing an elastic band on your wrist and 'pinging!' it when you feel stressed. It's an oldie but effective apparently.
When I use to have anxiety issues as a child my parents taught to gently, discretely, run my nail across my palm in calm circular motions so that it would relax me.
I'll let you know if I think of anything else.
And just for the record the answer is yes, I unintentionally bite the inside of my lips when I feel stressed, I really must stop because it's annoying me. Just typing it here is giving me the urge to do it!
