Promethazine side effects?

Recently I had a bit of a wobble on mirtazapine and to get myself straight I started pairing it with 25mg promethazine. My sleep got stable again, I felt a little better mentaly and was fine for 2 weeks. At which point I decided I want to taper off it and try something else for sleep like melatonin. But thats another story.

The thing is, that strength promethazine, for that amount of time might have caused me issues. Though its such a specific thing in a specific way its kind of hard to be sure. I noticed after those 2 weeks, if I woke up in the early morning, but still too early to get up and tried to get back to sleep I would get these weird arythmic heart beats.

I'm still not sure if that was overusing the promethazine, at that strength that might be the cause. I cut promethazine out for a while and have been very cautious about how often and the strength I've used it. Those heart flutters seem to have gone so it seems very likely. I was wondering if people that have made heavy use of promethazine have noticed issues like this?

What's weird is the first time I went onto mirtazapine and for about 2 years solid I used promethazine with it, mostly at 10mg strength, every night. I never had these issues with it. But obviously there's a big difference between taking 10mg every night and taking 25mg.

Hello Jayeffster. I don't have personal experience with the medications you are talking about, and I wonder if you are using them per physician orders. Our body chemistry changes all the time so something that worked before may not necessarily work the same again. Only thing I can say is if the medication isn't working for you, it's probably time to talk to your doctor about a change. They should be able to help you figure out the correct dosages. Best wishes

The doctor who prescribed me mirtazapine said promethazine was ok to use as well. Though as its an over the counter drug I have always self medicated it. I was just very curious to see if any other people had experienced anything similar with it.

Oh okay. In the US promethazine is prescription only. Sorry, I didn't know you were able to use without a prescription.
