Hello All. I'm Shannon! Mother of one 26 year old son and a former Registered Nurse. Diagnosed back in my 20's with bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and depression. Its been almost 3 years since I've been employed /as a nurse due to my illnesses. So here I am, 46 years old and not currently working. I feel so understimulated as in my job, I used to do a lot of critical thinking. I am currently looking for a p/t job that is not stressful but yet that will allow some socializing and brain activity/exercise. Is anyone else here on disability and not currently working? If so, what are some things you do to stay engaged/occupied. Thank you!

Shannon

hi Shanny Shan

I’ve been on disability for bipolar symptoms since 2010. I ran my own business and nonprofit all the way up till then so I had some money in my bank when I walked away from my marriage, because she wouldn’t help me at all with trying to find answers, for that matter, you did the rest of my family .

I use that money to flip a home and start a business but I wasn’t the same person. I failed that at all so what I do now is I help others. I volunteer with Nami. I coach youth sports I play with my grandsons. I found a new passion, and that I am writing. . I got a cool dog. buzzy.

I happen to be a Christian since 2005 and I’m live my life a bit for here but mostly for the promise of an eternal life and my gift that I’ve discovered from God is to serve others so I’m out there doing that as much as possible .

my nonprofit I was working with disadvantage schools and youth and severely handicap students, So now that I’m on disability, I may not have my own nonprofit, but I can work for people that do have a nonprofit set up whether through a church or directly for a nonprofit to help others.

If you go that route or you already have you’ll know that it’s a twofold plan .

One is since your helping the others you’re doing a good thing and the other one is when you do it makes you feel good

Keep looking for what your system can handle. I see some right on here that draw or paint or poetry or whatever that is that you can find or things that you can find and run with

All da best

My suggestion would be checking out some volunteer work, There are so many things you could do. Just Google volunteer jobs in your area.

Volunteering is a great way to get out there and meet people and it feels good to give back.
