hello. my honest experience with being involuntarily admitted (which is a different story than voluntarily admitting) was that it saved my life. the psych ward was terrifying because I had never experienced anything like it before, but the aftermath is what really helped me after stabilizing my meds. once I was discharged from the psych ward, my aftercare plan was to go to in-patient treatment for unresolved trauma, amongst other things mentally. it is always a terrifying step to finally accept help, but I promise it can be life-saving.

I've since had a relapse in mental health issues and have been in a dark period for some time now, but writing out this response to you has helped me to get out of my own head for a minute. you are not alone, please don't ever forget that. <3

I agree kittyloverr in that in-patient therapy can give you so much more help as well

as stabilize your medications. You have care all around you 24/7. You have a

structured day which in itself can cut down on anxiety as to what will happen next.

If one utilizes all that is given you during that time, it can be beneficial when you

return home. It was a very positive experience for me as well. :) xx

Is it an emergency? If so, you might not have a choice. If you do have a choice, do you have access to good research and the opinions of doctors you trust. I could have had a blood draw to find out some things, but decided against it, as I could change my diet and exercise habits, and achieve the answer I needed. That is not always the case. In this case the doctor didn't recommend a blood panel....I suggested it. All health situations might not have the leeway you need to make that same choice. Having a doctor you can trust and communicate with, and also doing as much research as you are able to do yourself, helps a lot to make wise decisions.

Sounds like it could be urgent and a hospital admission could be warranted. Just changing diet and exercise during a severe decline in mental health status isn't going to do much of anything. What would a blood draw have done for you??? And this person may not have time to wait nor time to 'do research". What would research do???

I was asking if it was considered an emergency by either the patient or doctor. That was the first question I asked. I was not saying it was not an emergency! She was asking questions and sounded like she didn't feel perfectly confident about being hospitalized. The point was not that I was trying to make a decision for someone else, in fact, just the opposite. You seemed to hear something that didn't exist I had no predetermined answer about her decision and had no need to influence her decision in any way. I have had a long process of gaining more confidence about my own decisions, which I didn't ever have naturally. I just gave one example which only related to me, not anyone else, but it is an example of looking for, and finding, more than two opposite choices of what to do. It wasn't specific advice, as I never believed that her solution was to get exercise and be on a diet.

I am in the US and have had a handful of admissions. I have found most of them to be very helpful. As Agora stated you have care 24/7 and it gives you a chance to stabilize on meds; though most admissions are not long enough to verify if a med is right for you or is the correct dose, but at least there are doctors and other supportive staff to monitor you. I felt safe while there and it was comforting being around others going through similar experiences. And a couple times the admissions did save my life.

Oh Alexapal, I am so sorry you were sent home way too soon. Was there

any recommendation for outpatient clinic that you can go to daily for a few

hours. At least you would have group, counselors and doctors who can help

you get stabilized. :) xx
