hi , I was given lorazepam 1 mg 3x a day for an episode of severe anxiety , do I stay on this now ? I was on diazepam and lithium for 5 years but hit a brick wall and stopped taking both , still on quietiapine but now lorazepam and it does really work like magic but once it’s worn off I’m there again , is the idea you stop taking it as the episode passes or you carry on regardless ?

thanks

Lorazepam is often prescribed for As Needed only. This is a great question for your prescribing doctor.

How did your Dr tell you to take them. I take 2 mgs a day and have done for 3 years. I am dependent on them now because they are very addictive, but I needed them. They are very good but they are not a cure. I am trying to find other solutions to my anxiety. If you can manage to only take them when needed that will not build up dependancy. But if your Dr tells you to take them daily do not be afraid to do this. But be on the look out for something that will help your anxiety long term of more natural because Lorazepam loses its potency and you end up needing more to get the same effect, but this takes a while. You must speak to your Dr first.

thank you for your reply , he said to take 1mg 3x a day for a week and then up the dose after that I’m not sure what dose it wil go up to yet . Diazepam after 5 years had stopped working just made me angry a lot ! But I feel like I’ve been given a life line now with these , I was so close to head butting a wall I couldn’t function at all I couldn’t stop crying I was so scared , I’ve been on them 3 days now and I finally have calm . It really is a relief …

Catching up with consultant end of week .

Any kind of "benzo" (e.g. valium, xanax, ativan) has a high potential for addiction. In most cases, using them is only a temporary solution. Like a previous poster said, I would try taking it on an as-needed basis to reduce the potential for addiction. That being said, I'm glad you are enjoying some relief right now. I would, however, ask your doctor what the long term plan is.

I would reach out to your doctor, but while lorazepam is slightly less addicting than diazepam, it is still something you should be very careful with. If it were me, I would ask him to adjust my other meds and keep the lorazepam for as needed for severe anxiety attacks. In fact, that's how my prescription is written!

Hi Zoflorawonderland, I noticed you follow me. I don't respond to followers because I am trying to sort out my new mental health issue. But because of what you told me I am responding here. I too went through what has happened to you 18 years ago. I was given lorazepam and a new anti depressant and bingo back to my old self again eventually. It was horrendous at the time but I want to assure you that you will be well again. I'm rooting for you.
