What's on your shopping list?

I'm trying to get my butt up to go to the grocery story and get my weekly supply of chicken, salads, cauliflower rice, non-dairy chocolate, and cherries.

What are some things that seem to appear regularly on your shopping list?

Hmmmm….interesting. Dairy free chocolate? How does it taste.

Fresh spinach and green beans, Macintosh apples, grape tomato’s, sometimes protein. That’s just on my list if I put the pedal to the metal. If I dont, I might as well not make a list. Having to eat is good motivation to get out of the house and myself, dress nice and feel better because of it. Seems more people are smiling at each other, too when I go and we can always use a smile.

It's good. It's made of oat milk. I went through a grape tomato phase last winter. Snacked on them everyday.

Non-dairy chocolate.

Ok…thanks. If it’s Lindt it’s gotta be good. Grape tomatoes are good for salads and snacking for sure, but they like to slide out of my sandwiches.

I've never put them in sandwiches. I actually use low-carb tortilla more than bread though, so if I did, they probably won't pop out.

Good point about the tortillas. I’ve tried the low carb and there’s nothing wrong with those babies. They are better , I think, health wise. I don’t usually have bread as a staple, but I do like a good pumpernickel bread on occasion. It has more flavor which helps me since I lost too much of the ability to taste when covid decided to be my guest for so long. And you know what they say about guests overstaying their welcome. 🤐lol

I am ashamed to say, but I’ve never gone to the grocery store to shop for an entire week’s worth of food before. I’ve only ever gone in with specific meal purchases in mind.

What kinds of things should one consider when planning a week’s groceries?

I didn't shop for the week until the pandemic. Prior to that, I just went to the store in our neighborhood whenever we needed something. We've recently started going back to shopping on an as needed basis. But the world still doesn't feel pre-pandemic. There's a lot of empty store spaces.

I could have so much fun with this but I'll keep it family-friendly lol. Always on my list is bread, eggs, coffee, and milk. If the food assistant points are in I'll stock up on meats, frozen vegetables, and a beef steak as a treat that we normally can't afford. Mom can't chew, so soup is always in the shopping cart. I like to keep honey, hot chocolate, and extracts like vanilla and coconut, those are the things I use to doctor my coffee. Flour, oil, spices, cheeses, and pasta sauce for making pizza, and fried chicken. Canned fruit for mum. It has to be canned because they are soft.

😆. That's so sweet that you take care of your mom. My parents live in their own home, but I find that they need me a lot for some things.

Tinned soup, chicken, tinned fish, peas, potatoes, baked beans, bread, cheese and ham

Chicken is definitely on my list every week. I make a big batch to throw on my salads.

My kids are the same. I ate a lot of red meat when I was young, but chicken seems to be the staple now.

I love fish. I actually prefer fish over chicken, but too much fish supposedly isn't good either.

That's interesting. Aside from bread, I don't think I've ever eat the other items. I get baked beans and carrots mostly for my kids, though.

Today after our carvery dinner at the pub we popped into Tescos nearby and got some items from there to replace the ones that had run out!

Last week at the swimming pool Ceri Ann who teaches the parent and baby swimming class had said to me how I had lost weight and had asked what had I been doing so I said how I had made friends with the local greengrocers up the hill which isn't lies as I have as when I'm in on a weekday and I need things I pop in to see them!

When we got evicted back in May we had decided to make the best of things and had used it as an opportunity for a fresh start which involved not keeping junk in the flat as when it's not there you don't want it!

Here we do a massive shop every 8 or so weeks and only replace essential items when they run out before the next massive shop.

What on earth is "non-dairy chocolate"? I wasn't aware chocolate had dairy in it.

Chocolate usually has milk in it, especially milk chocolate. But dark chocolate has milk too.

Ew, I hate milk in chocolate. I went and checked, and my Lindt bittersweet has no milk. Neither does the 85%. Yum!

I like the bittersweet. The darker the better. Dark chocolate covered cherries…or blueberries.

I got some 100% chocolate. It's a bit nasty. Goes well with chilli, I found. 85 or 90 is just right, for me.

(I also add black pepper to vanilla ice-cream. It's yummo!) 😉🙃

Wow….I can see how a 100% chocolate might be less than tasty. For me, anyway. I think 85% was good if I remember right. It’s been a while.

The pepper on your ice cream….that’s a new one, but I can’t knock it if I hadn’t tried it. I’m gonna see what that’s all about next time I have ice cream. What got you started on the pepper?

The history of chocolate is an interesting story. but in short, the cacao plant has fruit, in the fruit it has seeds, which people call beans for some reason. The beans are roasted, pressed, and ground into fine powder. the powder at this point is bitter, so they add sugar, and cocoa powder is born. Now reintroduce cocoa butter with cocoa powder, cook and pour into chocolate molds and that's pure chocolate. Then in the 1800s someone added powdered milk and it produced a smoother chocolate that was less bitter.

Salad and fruit are always on my list. I was considered a weird kid because I always ate my salad from our school lunches and every other kids' salad who didn't want them.

It's the same here with tea as we buy it in bulk when we do our massive shops and buy the long life milk in bulk as well!

I miss coffee. I was never able to drink regular. But I can't have the decaf anymore. I love the smell of it. French vanilla and hazelnut were my fave.

Bananas, turmeric or ginger juice shots. I can't get moving without porridge and these things, but we buy our porridge in bulk, so as never to run out.

Bananas are often hit and miss to get. But I'll happily take them green, yellow or turning black, Not fussed. They serve different purposes: Green is a good prebiotic and really gives you something to crunch. Just ripe bananas get a bit sweeter. But the post-ripe bananas are sweetest of all! Also boosts white cell count in the blood so, good for immunity maybe?

I get regular blood tests and they are always on about my white cell count. I put it down to the blacker bananas.. (Or cold showers... not sure. Citation needed!)

Anyway, what a pleasant and interesting read, 🤓

I like my bananas spotted. I haven't been able to eat them in a couple of years though. It gives me vertigo like dairy does.

I didn't eat bananas often so it wasn't a huge loss. The only fruits I really eat are cherries and watermelon.

Bread, potatoes for baking and shortbread biscuits. I couldn't get to any supermarkets due to flooding but the corner shop in the next village is so useful when one of you needs carbs. When the water subsides I will have a tiny list including firewood, Lo Salt and Fairy Liquid, not to mention salad veg and green beans.

There's a spar shop just a few doors down from here which is handy for small things when you have run out!

Here it's ideal as there's everything you need within walking distance and the buses into town are reliable on the whole.

I used to live in Manchester and it was like that. Now - well - we don't have a bus! We do have nice views and good weather on the whole.

I'm thinking of moving to a town. It would be useful in so many ways. More choice of activities, shops we could get exercise walking to for a small number of items, buses to the hospital, cinema, places to eat that aren't expensive restaurants.

We have store in the neighborhood I can walk to. It's so convenient. I consider it my 2nd fridge.

My previous neighbour used to work in Tesco so she didn't have to do a big shop once a week. Her shelves were always nearly empty. Mine are crushed. I certainly wouldn't drive to a shop every couple of days. My car is economical but it would still add up. Even if we lived within walking distance (our next village is only 1.5 miles away) I couldn't carry the shopping, especially up the hills. That's too far to walk without carrying anything.

I could get a delivery but these days I need to shop for fewer items. That would mean paying more for the delivery.

I like the variety of anything and everything.

I like to get frozen fruit, labne (spreadable yogurt), refrigerated red beans or lentils, frozen jasmine rice, smoked salmon, Kosher rye bread at the Co-Op, the ingredients to make homemade muesli, milk, and lots of tea. For the holidays, I like getting anise cookies and chocolate-marbled halwa (sesame candy).

Almost always out of baby spinach, tofu, mushrooms and udon noodles. Always stock up on fruit and I add one large Lindt 85% chocolate bar which I eat a couple of pieces each day as a treat.
