Hi there I was wondering if anyone has really bad anxiety attacks at the thought of going to the dentist even to make the call itself. I’ve had two extractions in the last two years. The last one I was literally shaking/trembling to the extent that my legs were hardly supporting me to walk properly. It’s so embarrassing to appear like this in front of other people in the waiting room. I worry about what they must think of me which increases my anxiety 😟. The trouble is I’ve had a slight toothache over the past few weeks which comes and goes but I can’t even bring myself to make the call and the thought of actually attending an appointment petrifies me. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Dental fear is not uncommon. Can you find a dentist who specializes in treating people who are very nervous? Alternatively explain to the dentist that you are frightened. That may help. I understand what you are saying because I may have to have a test (cystoscopy) that terrifies me. I also am not sure what to do. One good thing is definitively a tranquilizer.
Hi it’s awful how we let fear rule us in certain situations. Thank you for your response regarding my fear of the dentist. How do you cope with going or don’t you 😟.
Hi Junkjournal1 I think I could probably count on one hand regarding the folks
not fearful of the dentist. A lot can do with past experiences in that chair and a
lot has to do with our own anticipational anxiety.
What I do is have my headphones on listening to meditation affirmations while
sitting in the waiting room as well as in the dentist chair. I always focus on the good
feeling i'll have when walking out of the office lol
Since it's one of those things in life that needs to be done, we have to make the
best of the situation for our own comfort. Good Luck xx
I recently elected to be sedated for a dental procedure. I don't have a fear as I have had dental issues since youth.......but I sure don't love it. Don't let the pain get too far. I had fallen physically ill and am on all sorts of medications that cause dry mouth. HOLY COW. I ended up with more than 10 small cavities. While sedation isn't covered by insurance, it was worth it. They give you a benzo before you even come in (need driver) and then you get a shot. You are blissfully awake but not aware. I was able to get all cavities done in 4 hours. It saved me hours of going back and a lot of repeated stress to just get it done. I say don't let the pain get too far because you could have something like an infection that can mess with your physical health too. I'm so sorry. I totally understand and wish there was an easy answer. I just know that many dental practices are more understanding than 20 years ago and have some options. Laughing gas is another alternative as well and is cheaper than the sedation I mentioned. I've done both!
I have worked at a dental office for 15 years. Dental anxiety is very common. We specialize in treating patients with this condition. I would recommended finding a dentist in your area that caters to patients with dental anxiety.
For instance- we have a therapy puppy who eases people’s nerves. We can prescribe a one time anti anxiety pill, offer nitrous. Plus our doctor is very kind, personable and patient. Good luck!
