Hi Linzib1. Sorry you are having a tough time with GAD and fully understand what you are going through, having been there myself. Clearly I don't know you or your circumstances and how GAD developed. However, I may be able to help. It's a while since I've been on this forum but have posted alot of information about my recovery from anxiety which might help.

The catalyst for my recovery was a book written by Dr Claire Weekes called Essential Help for your Nerves. The most important aspect about recovery is to learn to accept your condition and stop trying to change the way you feel. The book is a bit dated but the principles this lady taught me will always be relevant.Medics would label it as GAD but all anxiety disorders [OCD, agoraphobia, PTSD and so on] are the same because they all have the same root cause which is fear. Most chronic anxiety sufferers fear the feelings of fear and why the condition perpetuates.

Thanks for the reply I really appreciate it. I’m listening to Dr Weekes now!! I just can’t understand why I wake up in the morning with my heart thumping and anxious 😬 I’ve just woke up lol. It really makes me scared. I’m really struggling atm with all this it’s really bad. I had it awful for the last month anxiety sky high and panic 24/7. Chronic !! I’m just coming down a little bit but this morning thing is really worrying me. Thanks again xx

This is very common with anxiety patients. Mornings being the worst.

Do not fear the feelings, it only helps promote the "fight or flight" response.

Hi again. Just repeating what Agora1 has already said. Please do not waste mental energy trying to figure it all out. There is no rhyme nor reason as to why you wake up with your heart beating out of your chest. It is very common and experienced alot of that myself. Once you get into Dr Weekes' teachings, you will begin to understand what it requires to recover. Absolutely nothing. Literally. Worrying about the symptoms (Dr Weekes refers to this as second fear) just fans the flames of anxiety so the key thing is to stop caring about the symptoms that scare you. Let them scare you. Let your anxiety run riot. By learning not to react, you stop fanning those flames and they will eventually burn themselves out. That fire needs to be left alone. Step aside and learn to observe those flames.

I know exactly how hard that may seem when you are in the thick of it but you will reach a point where , instead of engaging with the symptoms [ I call them the what ifs!??] , you acknowledge their presence and carry on going about your day, despite how you may be feeling. Your reaction evolves from what if, to so what!!!

Many sufferers, including me, grappled with the concept of acceptance for a while but in all honesty, it's no different to how you would react if you were suffering from a bad cold. You know its there, you feel like crap but you just carry on. You accept it. Then you start to feel better. Recovery from anxiety is no different, albeit it may take longer but recovery is inevitable because your mind and body goes through the natural healing process once we let it . That won't happen if you keep poking that fire and adding more worry and stress [ wood, fuel].
