Music is what keeps me sane. I listen to all kinds of songs. I feel bad for people who are deaf and can’t hear it.

So memorable in Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)

She was definitely versatile. A long way from”Pillow Talk”.

Was Rock Hudson in that movie? I never saw it.

You bet he was in it. Her cheeks were day glo around him. It was a sweet comedy.

I enjoyed seeing her with Gordon MacRae in On Moonlight Bay and its sequel, By the Light of the Silvery Moon. Sweet musicals.

”Annie Get Your Gun”…..she was a pistol. 😁

Betty Hutton starred (and sang) in the movie Annie Get Your Gun. She was terrific, but quit Hollywood soon after as she felt she was mistreated making that film.

Doris was in a knock-off, Calamity Jane.

Real question or just smarty?

The Man Who Knew Too Much. When Jimmy Stewart gives his wife sleeping pills before telling her their son has been kidnapped. Doris plays it to wrench your heart.

I never saw the original, did you? If yes, did you like it?

mrmonk profile image
mrmonk in reply to Nothing_but_books

Oh, a little of both, I suppose. I hadn't seen the film (or the 1934 original) since I was a teenager, and I didn't remember the scene.

I wasn't a big fan of either film, though I do remember Peter Lorre was his usual creepy, menacing self in the original.

Hey, speaking of revivals, did you hear that NBC is bringing back Quantum Leap? Not as a remake, though -- the main characters are new -- but, seemingly, as a continuation of the original premise. I'm interested to see what they do with it. Here's the trailer if you want to check it out:

Moi? Of course I heard. I'm celebrating by rewatching my favorite episodes, M.I.A., Jimmy... I'll watch, for sure, but I've already seen the teaser and I'm dreading it. I wonder if they'll get Scott Bakula to put in an appearance?

Thanks for the heads-up. What I really want is more Monk. Even the pandemic short was cause for celebration.

mrmonk in reply to Nothing_but_books

Those are a couple of my favorite episodes, too -- the ones that never fail to make me cry like a baby. Yes, a Quantum Leap marathon is definitely in order.

I think it's likely that there will be an appearance by Scott Bakula since Sam is still out there and there is precedent in the original series for such an encounter.

I'm also hopeful for a Monk revival at some point -- they certainly left it open to the possibility.

Nothing_but_books in reply to mrmonk

mrmonk, you astonish me! I imagined you much more stoic. It's nice to learn you enjoy the show too.

Speaking of tears, the original finale was too much for me.

Well, the Monk finale too -- don't get me started on that song -- but I'm thinking of the Quantum Leap finale. I'm kind of hoping they'll consider putting right what once went wrong. Will Dr. Sam Beckett finally make the leap home?

mrmonk profile image
mrmonk in reply to Nothing_but_books

Wait...you don't remember our early conversations (shortly after you first joined HealthUnlocked) about Quantum Leap? I've written to you that it's one of my favorite shows!

It seems like everyone imagines me to be so much different than I really am and how I present myself online...Stoic? I cry at the drop of a hat...I cry every single time I watch It's A Wonderful Life...

And oh yes, I was going to mention the Quantum Leap finale...I was absolutely gutted. But at the same time, it was so in keeping with Sam's character. His sacrifice for Al -- and Al's for Sam in part two of "The Leap Home" -- breaks me up just thinking about it.

Nothing_but_books in reply to mrmonk

Sigh. I do remember throwing a "Bingo Bango Bongo" at you, and being asked if I watched Quantum Leap.

I had a remarkable memory at one time. Truly.

I thought I said something when it was just a sense I had, but now I am officially diagnosed with cognitive impairment.

I hate forgetting our conversations. I wish I could pick and choose the memories I keep.

"His sacrifice for Al." Now I'm crying.

It's okay, mrmonk. Now I know (right now anyway, no guarantee an hour from now) we'll share the Kleenex.

Remembering what I used to remember... My mind is flooded with the poems of my childhood.

mrmonk profile image
mrmonk in reply to Nothing_but_books

Yes -- "Bingo Bango Bongo" -- I knew you'd remember!

Cognitive impairment sucks for sure. I've had a form of it since I was a kid, so I'm used to it. But it must be much harder when faculties that were once unimpaired begin to fail.

I think that's why I don't place a lot of stock in memory, knowledge, and intelligence -- sooner or later, it likely mostly goes. And what we are left with is what we are born with -- feeling -- primal, instinctive, bestial feeling.

That, to me, is the stuff of poetry.

People are such a bundle of contradictions.

I remember, now tell me if I'm wrong, when we first began speaking. You told me you responded to a post of mine because I wrote well (or some such).

You don't place stock in memory, knowledge, and intelligence. Or do you -- in some ways?

I think we share a love of words well used.

"Do I contradict myself? / Very well then I contradict myself, / (I am large, I contain multitudes.)" -- Uncle Walt

***

Okay, maybe "place a lot of stock" is a poor choice of words -- what I mean is I don't think they are what should define us (though this may seem counterintuitive).

Of course, I recognize the utility of memory, knowledge, intelligence, and I admire those that exemplify those things.

What I've always most appreciated about your writing was that it was distinct and deliberate, that I had a sense of the person from the use of language.

In your last sentence, I depart from you after the word "words." I think because you regard intelligence more highly than I do, you love words "well used."

I'm just in love with words -- especially the commonplace, two-bit, dull, overused, unsurprising, and seemingly uninteresting words. Those are the words I love best.

Nothing_but_books profile image
Nothing_but_books in reply to mrmonk

Bless Uncle Walt. Thank you for reminding me.

You always challenge me. Wait! I don't mean anything negative, just... You make me think.

Your description of my writing gives me pause. Because it's you, because you are a wonderful writer, I searched myself. No. I have to let it go. Not a clue.

What do mean by "well used"? When I read good writing, I can sense something I can't define. See, I can tell lousy writing. Yup. Toss that over there. Good writing alone isn't enough. I'm struggling to be understood now. By itself, it leaves me flat. But when a writer has hold of something extraordinary, the words can sing -- I know I'm being corny -- in harmony with the universe! Go ahead and laugh. I don't have your gift with words. The tingle in my spine when I read... what? Oh, maybe "Ode to a Nightingale". Or... Here's a 180, "The Emperor of Ice Cream".

It isn't academic writing that touches me. I get angry at the crap the elite push.

I'm giving up because I don't know how to define what I know.

I don't think you take flattery well, but you're in there. Whatever it is, I know it when I read it.

I've got to force myself to go to bed. I'm not sleeping any more. Maybe a couple hours tonight if I"m lucky. Thank you for a pleasant evening mrmonk.

mrmonk is a very sensitive man. He wrote such a beautiful poem about my granddaughter and I. This was during lock down when I was so sad I couldn't see her.

I love that you have a poem. He's fabulous. I have a snap shot of mine on my phone. It makes me cry every time I read it. I'm crying now too.

I've missed you. I'm happy to see you back.

Not my poem. I've never inspired poetry that way. He had -- may still have -- a lovely poem on his home page for all to share. At least that's where I think I found it. It's given me solace many times.

I hope mrmonk doesn't mind us gals having a little chat about him.

Yes, I assumed by the way you said it that it was one from his chap book that spoke to you.

He should be flattered that we are speaking about his passion. He is an amazing writer :)

But maybe we better stop so we don't make him uncomfortable.
