40 million Americans struggle with anxiety disorders annually and close to 16 million adults age 18 or older have experienced at least one major depressive episode in the past year.

Anxiety disorders and depression are real, serious, and treatable.

ADAA’s critical mission focuses on improving the quality of life for those struggling with anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, OCD, and co-occurring disorders through education, practice, and research.

Destigmatizing mental health issues is very important. However, I have many relatives who I do not want to discuss my mental health issues with. I grew up this way as well. There is a long history of mental illness on my mom’s side of the family. When my mom was initially hospitalized for mental health issues in 1984 for agoraphobia I was the only one from the family who went to visit her. This was b4, I was officially diagnosed in 1997. This is why I rely on

HU anxiety website, hotlines and

Some close friends.

You R correct. But there still is a lot of “SUCK IT UP MENTALITY “ and people who would rather drink or do drugs

heavily than face their mental

health issues.

I am Native American. Many communities are coming to terms with the past and are starting to heal. While this is great, it means we see each other in mental health hospitals frequently. The mental health system including the DSM do not address the cultural differences between our tribes and do not treat us as persons, we are not individuals. We belong to a tribal nation which gives us our personhood. This needs to change going forward. We are willing to get treatment, but it needs to become more holistic so that we can feel comfortable to attend treatment and be successful in treatment.
