Non-rx remedies for depression and anxiety

I am starting to meditate more. I need to make it part of my routine. I do notice some temporary relief.
Hi BubbleGumPop....Definitely my Meditation and Breathing upon awakening, midafternoon and before bed helps me immensely. Every so often I have a
banana which seems to calm my nervous system. Whatever works, believe in it xx
That's my area of expertise. I'm currently on l-Metylfolate 5MTHF and i have had luck with St. John's Wort, 5-HTP, Sam E, Rhodiola for depression. For anxiety i use ashwagandha, l-theanine, Gaba.
You can Google these find them easily online or at health food stores.
Walking 20 to 30 minutes a day is a great natural antidepressant.
I've tried St John's Wort, Sam-E, and GABA to no avail. I'll research your other ideas. I need to walk more but find myself thinking about it and not doing it.
Walking does wonders but you do need at least 30minutes each day. I notice that when I do less its not noticeable the change. For anxiety I use Kava and it helps. I use Gaba at night and helps to have a better sleep. When anxiety is very high, ill take a quick cold shower (this is painful though) and usually calms me right away.

I never had any success with those alternative treatments.
Vitamin D helps. My dr told me B12 and magnesium. I think they help if there are underlying causes. For example magnesium helps with inflammation and sleep which may in turn help depression. There are several types of magnesium. A major factor could be your diet. Useful to look into that.
Thanks, BlueRuth. I take vit D regularly for past year due to deficiency in blood work, and I just recently started taking B12 and Magnesium Citrate from a friend's recommendation. Time will tell, but you saying it too gives me hope. I have some inflammation/neuropathy problems as well. I'm taking Lyrica but it just helps a little. I'm going to see a neurologist soon to also sort some of this out. Thanks.
See if you can get your doctor to order a blood test where they test for all vitamin, mineral, etc. levels. Like someone above said, often magnesium is too low. I take ashwaghanda and highly recommend CBD oils. But you want to get a verified full spectrum. If you might have to pass a drug test though, cbd does have a tiny, tiny trace of THC (marijuana). It won’t get you high at all, but shows up in a drug test. But I take 30 mg of CBD 1-4 times a day depending on what’s going on. And I also do EFT tapping for anxiety. Google it, it helps me.
I recently bought the Fisher Wallace Stimulator because I had no positive results from Clomipramine that my Dr prescribed. I have been on hydroxyzine only which does help some but not enough. This is my 2nd week so far not sure it's doing anything yet, but my next try will be Brilla, which is a homopathic non prescription for adhd and anxiety, but don't know about depression. It's expensive but no side effects. I'm debating to try it for my son who has adhd but am looking into it more.
I also watch Jay Shetty meditation on YouTube which always helps and he has great spiritual growth insight with the many interviews he does with celebrities and newbies alike.
I recommend the following: Turmeric (also anti-inflammatory), Omega 3, Vitamin C, Vitamin B complex, vitamin D, Magnesium. I take the following together at the same time:1)Turmeric & Omega
2) vitamin B complex & vitamin D
3) vitamin C chewable, throughout the day whenever I need extra help
4) magnesium before bed
Eating healthy helps. Some foods that help me:
Pumpkin seeds, roasted/baked chicken, liver wurst, vegetables especially a good salad, tuna, shrimp and Kifer (liquid yogurt).
Exercise. Go for a swim in a warm therapy pool.
Pray to Heavenly Father for help. He wants to hear from you.
Hope this helps!
One suggestion about turmeric: take it with black pepper and a little fat, it absorbs better. I take a multi vitamin, magnesium, ashwagandha, b complex, holy basil, rosemary, oregano, vitamin d, vitamin k2, vitamin e, vitamin c, beta carotene (vitamin a) and others. I empty the capsules and take the powder, plus allow gel caps to dissolve in my mouth first. I have a hard time digesting capsules. I have become used to the unpleasant taste of the contents.
Look up Trudy Scott. She wrote The Antianxiety Food Solution. It isn't just food. She includes gaba, 5htp, etc.
I have tried every vitamin, supplement and alternative treatment. Only one supplement actually had any effect on anxiety for me, and it’s never one that gets suggested: l-lysine. I was having constant pains attacks in waves and no one would prescribe anything to help me. Taking 500 mg of lysine every 2 hours or so got rid of the constant anxiety. There have been studies showing it to lower cortisol levels. No other herb, tea, vitamin or supplement helped at all. “EFT Tapping” has helped me get through really bad anxiety attacks too. The tapping solution has a great app. I hope this helps! 💚
The Trudy Scott book "The anti-anxiety food solution" is good for both diet and supplement info. I've found Valerian Root tincture to help with anxiety/sleep issues and also CBD if you can get it. There are certain strains of it that are better for anxiety. I live in the States and it's legal where I live. One of the things to do for anxiety is to lower your cortisol levels by eliminating caffeine and taking Phosphatidylserine, ashwaghanda and magnesium glycinate. I also take SAMe.
One of the things that has helped me the most is practicing simple mindfulness everyday to be able to observe my thoughts without attachment and be more present in my life. Another one is learning and doing ACT therapy to be willing and able to investigate, allow and accept my feelings no matter what they are, the good, bad and the ugly and trying to not judge them and be kind and loving to myself.
I’ll add to what some others have said. I didn’t find any supplements significantly helped my anxiety or depression beyond the placebo affect. They definitely cost a lot though. CBD did have one effect, before bed it greatly reduced my stress dreams.
