First finished drawing in 3 years.

Captain America that I drew for my nephew. Got about 7-8 hours into this piece (I work slow). This project started out as simply making good on a promise to a child. But it turned into much more. I had honestly forgotten how much I loved drawing. For those who are interested, done with Micron felt tip archival art pens and Prismacolor Premiere markers. Credit to original artist: Joe Madureira.

Fabulous work! If only I could draw like that. I have an idea for a graphic novel but can't draw 😂

Thanks, CL3V3R-G1RL! Unfortunately I can only draw from reference. My figure construction from imagination is pretty abysmal! And as you can see, my backgrounds skills are rather lacking, lol.

Also, what is your idea for a graphic novel? I grew up on comics and love talking about them with anyone who will listen, lol. I would love to hear your idea, if you feel like sharing it.

Well it's not my idea lol it's a short story I read and thought it would make a good graphic novel. The short story is about a robot who is investigating the paranormal in search for why he became sentient.

Oooh, love it. Great premise for a story. Lots of possibilities there. Is the robot a functional robot (like WALL-E), or a full on android type?

CL3V3R-G1RL profile image
CL3V3R-G1RL in reply to RupertBrown

In the story it's an Android used for marketing purposes for a brewery. Then one day he just started to have memories of his time as just this thing. Then wonder when did he become self aware. Now having to navigate this future we are in. Cause he's actually an old android like 100yrs old. He's investigating the paranormal wondering if there is anything out there to explain his existence. Plus he kind of fears "death". Cause he doesn't know what made him become self aware. So there's a chance this could all disappear too. Then he's an old robot...they don't make parts for him like they used to. He can't go into a Home Depot ask for fuses 😂

I Invision the robot to look a little steampunkish like an Iron Giant or the Lil robot in Hugo (don't know if you seen that movie).

That sounds amazing! I sort of want to read this short story now. Seems perfect for a graphic novel! I loved Iron Giant, but I haven't seen Hugo.

The book is called Centralia, it's a collection of short stories that I think could be made into graphic novel. It's available on Amazon.

I am going to have to check that out. Thanks for the heads up. I read Matt Fraction and David Aja's Hawkeye run a few months ago and it really stood out to me as some very fine graphic storytelling. They won some Eisner awards for it. If you're into comics I'd highly recommend it. It kind of gets into what Hawkeye does when he's not being an Avenger, so you need little to no knowledge of Marvel lore to enjoy it. It also (lightly) portrays Clint Barton's struggle with depression in a very frank and realistic manner, without being heavy-handed about it.

I kind of fell out with comics but trying to get back in it. Like the last thing I read was Superman Kingdom. So Marvels Clint story is up my alley with the depression. Ooh I'm finishing up Saga (don't know if you heard of that comic)

This is so incredible! You have cultivated an amazing talent! I’m so glad to see you’re drawing again; like going back to a favorite place or an old friend. It’s one lucky kid who gets to have this on their wall. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks The_Color_Blue. It felt nice to finish a project. When I'm drawing it's like my mind shifts into a different gear. The only thing I can think to compare it to is meditation. At any rate, I hope you're right and that he likes it. Thanks again for the kind words.

You have talent. That's not something to let go by the wayside for years. Use it!

Thanks NBP! I wish I was half as good at drawing as I am at making excuses not to. I don't want to put the cart before the horse, but maybe that's changing. This drawing felt different. It's not often that I'm actually content with a finished piece, but with this one I am. We shall see where this leads.

You tempt me... Yes. I want to share a quote from one of my favorite authors. It's about being a writer, but I believe writing, art, and music are all sacred. Yes, I mean to use that particular word. If you can do it -- and you can... Well. He says it much better than I ever could.

.

A lesson any writer can use. Don’t be afraid. That simple; don’t let them scare you. There’s nothing they can do to you. If they kick you out of films, do TV. If they kick you out of TV, write novels. If they won’t buy your novels, sell short stories. Can’t do that, then take a job as a bricklayer. A writer always writes. That’s what he’s for. And if they won’t let you write one kind of thing, if they chop you off at the pockets in the marketplace, then go to another marketplace. And if they close off all the bazaars, then by God go and work with your hands until you can write, because the talent is always there. But the first time you say, “Oh, Christ, they’ll kill me!” then you’re done. Because the chief commodity a writer has to sell is his courage. And if he has none, he is more than a coward. He is a sellout and a fink and a heretic, because writing is a holy chore.

—Harlan Ellison, Dangerous Visions

Couldn't agree more about the writing and the arts being sacred. Imagination is the greatest gift given to man. To not use it, not express it, and not filter what we see through it, would be a sin. Absolutely love that quote.

I'm happy you enjoyed it. If you don't know Ellison's writing, check it out. Maybe look for "'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman". Probably his most famous short story.

Oh, by the way, he's the guy that wrote "City on the Edge of Forever", voted one of the best TV episodes ever by TV Guide readers. If you've ever seen it, you'll remember it.

Ah, one of the best Trek episodes! I love Star Trek, though I'm not familiar with the new streaming shows. I've seen every episode of every show through Voyager several times. I should check out some of Ellison's work, I hear his name mentioned a lot.

Let me know what you think if you do.

He was also creative consultant on the first year of The New Twilight Zone. You can find some of his shorts dramatized there. Also Stephen King's "Grandma". It scares me even remembering it.

You could turn professional!!

RupertBrown profile image
RupertBrown in reply to samack

Thanks samack! I wouldn't say this drawing "flowed" necessarily, parts of it were a struggle, particularly the face, (I am weak in this area). But I worked through it and it turned out alright. Thanks again!

RupertBrown, you have a serious talent, embrace it and keep going. Beautiful work!
