I am just wrapping up my first semester of college. I do not know how to really explain what I am feeling but I will do my best. I feel like I am just now opening my eyes to what is actually going on in the world. Or like I took off a filter on a photo and am seeing it the way it is in reality. I know that I was aware of things going on in the world during high school but now it just feels more raw I guess? I am starting to read a lot more articles about things going on in the world but I can tell it is having a negative effect on my mood and outlook on life. I guess what I am trying to ask is how do I stay informed on things but not let it effect me too much? I am just feeling like there is no hope for humanity and there is so much corruption in this world, like why even try? Any advice or stories would be great.

Hi, In an enclosed place such as a college, you will be bombarded with information about politics, Animal rights, human rights and all kinds of other political stuff. It can have a very negative effect on a sensitive person.
But, not all of it is accurate, so try to find out what is going on Behind the hype, rather than take it at face value. Turn to the science behind it , rather than looking at the sensationalist stuff in the mainstream press and TV.
Better still, you are at College to learn, not be dragged into activism. Try not to get involved.
Have you seen a doctor? explained how you feel to him, or her? Maybe a short course of anti-depressants could help you.
If you are going home for the holidays, give your dog a huge hug. Doggy hugs are great! And relax as much as you can over the holidays.
Cheers, Midori
I agree with Midori. College is not the real world. People will try to manipulate you with their political views and interests. The best way to counter this is to retain ties outside of school and limit your news consumption. Most of the media is highly slanted in one direction or the other and must be taken with a grain of salt in most instances. Particularly maintain ties with older people who are wiser and have lived in the world far longer and have seen more reality. I’m currently reading a book you might enjoy. It lays out what is important in life through Native American stories. It is called the Lakota Way and is full of real wisdom about real life.
