There are hundreds of reasons a person may have depression.......one of which may be biochemical. However............there are many many other reasons............WE all agree..........this person suffers............its a horrible double whammy to say Joe has a mental illness because he has depression.........or anxiety............while it may be relevant in clincial circles ............

it should NOT be used in conversation.............i

refuse..........i dont want to ever hear any of my friends say they have a mental illness.......

anymore than a doctor always talking about someones prothesis.......

or wheelchair

what wheelchair?

i refuse to use the terms mental illlness in non clincial circles..........i refuse

i refuse to tell someine with a wheelchair about their disablity..........i refuse

i have artifical knees ............

i refuse to think about it..........

i refuse to let the people who hurt and destroyed my life

win

there are times when we all hit rock bottom

i refuse to give my violators the satisfaction..........i will not

let them win..........

success how ever small...........just keep movign or helping a friend or

not letting the smucks win

is a victory however small

succdess is still..........a very very good way of revenge

work in food kitches or volunteer or take care of

or do some self rewards..............is total fine to be there for others

even if others dont undersand.........its not thier life

we dont quit because i am not

caving to the critics and i am not

going to let them win...........

and im am not

useing this innane clincial catagory -mental illness

joe is depressed ..........fine- so who hasnt been sometime in their life

we all can use a trule blue freined buddy.....someoen in our corner

oh his mother died - well who wouldnt be or his dog is in the vet hospital

id be depressed too...........

Hey Brig57. I am happy that you are feeling empowered. I wonder if the problem isn't the diagnosis of mental illness, but instead the stigma attached to it. It's true that everyone will experience some sort of depression in their life, but some of us have been feeling it on a daily basis for years. For me, viewing it as an illness has helped to validate my struggles and allowed me to understand that there are aspects that are beyond my control and beyond what can be explained away as merely a result of unfavorable life circumstances. The great thing is that we all have the power to define ourselves. I hope you understand that my response is not an argument against your right to label your experiences by your own terms, but just my explanation of why I would choose to use a clinical term that might make some uncomfortable. I respect what you said and wish the best for you!

Well I think one reason for being depressed is really grief. We don’t think of that as mentally ill. But if you have the flu we do think of that as sick. So I agree there is a stigma more than anything else. You can get well after having a mental illness. Unfortunately insurance companies don’t think so since it is a permanent preexisting condition when they were legal. Big pharma doesn’t want you to heal so they make drugs and recommend a life sentence.
