Welcome Jonnydc to this safe forum. The "key" to success has always been the same and that's Acceptance of anxiety.
The more we fear and fight it, the more we go into the "Fight or Flight" response.
It's just a given...
My success was built on the theory of Dr. Claire Weekes' book "Hope & Help for Your Nerves". She was a psychiatrist who herself suffered from severe anxiety. Her study
proved to help not only herself but her patients as well. Her theory is now accepted all over
the world.
Anxiety is but a negative thought that grows into physical symptoms as we fear it.
By finding different methods of relaxation that will work for you, these symptoms can be lowered and even stopped in mid action.
When I first experienced severe anxiety and agoraphobia, Xanax and therapy were the
drug/method of choice. Since then so many new methods of stress relief have been proven
to work. The thing is that they must be used everyday. It took 30 years of your life and you
can't expect to overcome this overnight.
I use many different modalities such as Self Hypnosis, Mindfulness, Biofeedback etc etc
Meditation and proper Breathing can be incorporated with these tools.
It's not about running away from the enemy but facing him head on. You are in the right
place to get the help you need. As others share their experiences, pick what you think may
work for you and ignore the rest. We are here for you. I'm glad you took this first step
forward. Good Luck xx
Agree with Agora1. The only way out is through but it is so scary to go through it that it goes on and on and we can come up with a lot of excuses why we can't do something but the reality is that it is all about the fear and the fear response. It is the boogey man. And not everyone can face boogey man. It seems too big and too scary. Monitor your thoughts (fears) and acknowledge and accept them and then focus on something else. Not that easy but try.
Hi Jonny, I too have experience panic and anxiety for as long as I can remember, and have been through some pretty scary times. I agree with what everyone as already said, the more you try to fight anxiety and make it stop, the louder it becomes, I try and just accept that sometimes I am going to go through these thoughts and feel symptoms, and that I have to accept them, noting them as they arise. With me I link symptoms to the panic, so if I get too hot I relate that to panic as its a symptom I feel whilst in the fear. So I note it, yes I'm hot, yes my hearts racing out my chest, do some breathing, close my eyes and just wait patiently. You're not alone is the main thing to remember, and keep telling yourself after every episode, I've been here before, I was ok after it, I'll be OK. Leave yourself a note somewhere like in your bathroom telling yourself to just breathe, you'll be ok 👍
Hi Jonny. I’ve been where you are. I was having panic attacks all most every day along with the anxiety. This went on for months. Just hated waking up to the day. Got so bad my thoughts went to dark place. Like suicide. Scared me so much went to doctor and then checked myself into Mental Health unit in hosp. Learned so much there. Got on new medication Got on new medication and what a difference in my life. Here it was my meds bringing on most of panic. It’s been a month now and only have had anxiety 2 times. And I learned this from a nurse. Put ice cubes in each hand. Rub in hands and around neck till ice is gone. Think of the coldness on the body. Anxiety will go away Sounds weird but it works. Life is beautiful now. I wish the same for you. If your on medication check with doctor. Maybe you need something new. Sure made a difference in my life. I pray you can find a new day and new life. God Bless you 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
Hello Jonny, I dealt with anxiety/panic for many years and what really helped me was learning about what anxiety/panic really is and how to accept the anxious thoughts and feelings as some others here have mentioned. Of all of the books and therapy I tried over the years, I found the youtube videos of Dr. Claire Weekes and the DARE Anxiety book, videos and program the most helpful. I also found that getting my hormones (testosterone), thyroid and adrenals all functioning well helped because they can also contribute to or cause anxiety/depression.
